Confiding
Elixir cracked open the front door and took a seat on the step beside him, though how sheâd known heâd still be there puzzled her. She slipped her hand through the crook at his elbow, and around his upper arm, tilted her head and rested it gently upon his shoulder. She so enjoyed the feeling of his strong shoulder beneath her cheek. The joy of togetherness filled her senses. He seemed engrossed in his own thoughts, and she wondered for a time whether she should speak. At long last, she decided they needed to talk.
âYouâve learned a good deal about my family this evening. And about us,â she said.
âThank you for confiding in me. I know it must have been a difficult decision to trust me.â
âThe only choice we had, with me so smitten.â
âSmitten?â A smile grew on his face. âI never imagined you might feel as I do. I only hoped.â
âImagine it.â
âIâm sitting here wondering what it might be like to know othersâ futures. It must be a heavy responsibility to see such things.â
âA weighty responsibility, yes, and a wonderful gift our family possesses. We consider it a blessing. We know not how our ancestors earned the honor, but we consider it a treasure, with which weâve been endowed. You now understand why I must work. You realize why I could never abandon my familyâs business. I must do as I have been created to doâsoothsay for all my days.â
He nodded and looked toward her lovingly. She basked in the warmth of his expression.
Then he asked, âHow does it feel when you soothsay? What is it you see?â
She had never confided in anyone outside of her family. Since they shared her gifts, no explanation had ever been needed. Then she thought about how surprised sheâd been at the nightmareâs revelations. She wondered if the absence of discussion of how the messages were received meant others in her family might feel differently when they have insights. She resolved to have a long conversation with her family, in which they would share all the variety they had seen. They might well enhance their services if they pooled experiences.
Why had she never considered the advantages that might flow from conversation regarding their gift? Funny how people too often took things for granted and failed to make enhancements, even though they could easily be accomplished. She had seen such missed opportunities in othersâ futures. Why had she failed to recognize such a chance the Views had available? Suddenly she realized that just as she had opened Lanceâs eyes regarding his family finances, he had inadvertently opened her eyes to a road to greater excellence in soothsaying. Communication was critical.
Turning back to his question, she reflected how she had never expressed her senses in words. It took her a few minutes to select the right descriptions. âSometimes I see the future as clearly as if it were the real world moving in front of my eyes. At other times, the presentation is like a puzzle with many gaps in the picture, and only a few cogent reflections of the underlying scene.
