CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE

Buxton Residential Home, England

The previous days had been trying for Jayne.

The good news had been that Robert was released from hospital and was convalescing at the Home in Buxton with Vera. They had spent a quiet New Year’s Eve together before Robert felt tired and went to bed early. Jayne had spent a couple of hours to see in the New Year with Vera and the rest of the residents before heading back to Didsbury along a very quiet A6.

All in all, it was a subdued start to 2018.

The bad news was that Jayne wasn’t certain how to proceed with the investigation into the lives of her grandfather and grandmother. This uncertainty was unusual for her. Normally, investigations proceeded smoothly, with each discovery leading on to the next. But in investigating her own family, she seemed to have stalled. There simply wasn’t enough information to work with.

As she drove down the A6 to see how Robert was, tucked in behind an old dear who insisted on driving at 25 miles per hour in the centre of the road, she went through the case in her mind. Martin Sinclair had said his mother was betrayed, but how? It seemed she was a Frenchwoman who had married John Sinclair in 1938, having a baby on the first day of World War Two: September 3, 1939. That baby turned out to be her own father, Martin.

John Sinclair was killed in the first year of the war, flying for the RAF during the German invasion of France. A brave man, he had won the Distinguished Flying Cross. What had happened to her grandmother and how had she been betrayed? That’s what Jayne didn’t understand.

The woman in front finally signalled left and Jayne accelerated past her.

Where could she go next? She had looked in the Deaths Registry for Monique Sinclair and Monique Massat, her maiden name, but there was no listing. Surely she couldn’t still be alive? She would be nearly one hundred years old if she were. And didn’t her father say she was dead, and that he had been made an orphan?

She parked the car outside the Home, her brain still turning over the problem. Inside the reception, Rachel was manning the desk.

‘How is he today?’

‘Much better, back to his old self. Matron is very pleased with him.’

That was a turn-up for the books; the Matron being pleased with Robert for a change.

‘They’re in the lounge if you want to see them.’

‘Doing the crossword?’

‘Right first time. Or, in their case, right after about six hours working on the clues.’

Jayne smiled as she walked past the television room into the lounge. Vera and Robert were the only people there. She heard Robert’s voice as soon as she entered. She could see them both sitting down on the couch with their backs to her. Robert had a shawl over his shoulders and was holding the newspaper.

‘I don’t think it’s Glasgow, Vera.’

‘It must be. Read the clue again.’

‘“A short drink travels to the head of Wales for a place in Scotland”.
