Chapter Nine

Fortunately, the pub was deserted when Mary arrived at eight o'clock. Cleo had gone out for a while, probably hoping that Jim would be rushed off his feet and unable to cope. Pouring Mary a large vodka and tonic, Jim leaned on the bar and smiled at her. She was wearing her flimsy summer dress, the teats of her breasts clearly defined by the tight material. He was going to have to be gentle with her. She'd simply clam up if he became annoyed and angry.

"Where would you like to start?" he asked her.

"There's nothing to say," she breathed.

"One thing that strikes me as odd is your swearing. Or, I should say, lack of it."

"I don't swear all the fucking time," she returned.

"I noticed that, in the church basement, you didn't swear once. Why was that?"

"Is that what you wanted to talk about? Swearing?"

"You know what I want to talk about, Mary. What did your father say when you got home?"

"He wasn't around. He never is on Sunday afternoons. Just as well, really."

"How much do the monks pay you?"

"They don't."

"So, what do you get out of it?"

"Sex. What more could a girl want?"

"That wasn't sex, Mary. It was sexual torture, for Christ's sake."

"Call it what you like, I loved it. I realize that you're not going to give up with your questioning, so I'll tell you all I know. When my mother left, I got really pissed off and started looking for some excitement. I screwed around, fucked anyone and everyone. It was great because I had something to look forward to and men liked me. Well, they liked my cunt. Then I met Davey. We fucked like hell, and I loved it."

"Does Davey live locally?"

"No, he lives in another village a few miles away. He took me to what I thought was going to be a party. When we got there, to this man's house, the place was full of monks. They all fucked me, and I wanted more and more. Eventually, we went to the church basement to fuck. And that's all there is to it."

This was pointless, Jim thought as he downed his beer and refilled his glass. The girl had no intention of telling the truth. He had thought about sexually torturing the truth out of her but, after her time in the church with the monks, he doubted that she'd flinch an eyelid let alone talk. Wondering whether to make up some fantastic story, spin an incredible web of lies, he came up with an idea.

"I might as well be honest with you," he said, doing his best to look serious. "I've been sent here to find out what's going on."

"Sent here?" she breathed, her sky-blue eyes frowning at him.

"I'm working undercover."

"You're a copper?"

"No, no. I work for a Sunday tabloid. I've been sent here to expose... I can't say too much."

"Er... So, how much do you know?"

"A hell of a lot. But I need to discover more before we run the story and expose.
