MADAM WALKER IN THE “WOMAN’S ERA” AND BEYOND

While Walker’s ambition allowed her to elude many of the obstacles placed in front of her by the male-dominated NNBL, she never issued a systematic critique of the organization’s expectations in regard to black womanhood. The League’s annual reports suggest that explicit criticism was not heard on the convention floor until 1917, when Mrs. D. Lampton Bacchus spoke unexpectedly (i.e., “at her request”) on the topic “Woman—A Factor in Business.” Elaborating on the type of obstacles confronting black female entrepreneurs, Lampton Bacchus states:

Today she occupies a unique place in the world, being confronted by a woman question, a business and a race question, and yet, she is almost an unknown and an unacknowledged factor in each. We often find ourselves hampered with a very, very conservative attitude from those whose opinions we seek and respect most. This is not true of all our men, for had we not the support of them, no woman could succeed in business or be employed in the different occupations of men.33
