CHAPTER 14
I Didn't Ask to Be Born
The shower I take that night is both relieving and frustrating. The cool of the water droplets arrest the pain of my bruised skin. I tighten the faucet handles, exit the shower and get dressed for bed. Lying on my bed, I retreat underneath the sanctuary of the refreshing sheets. If I'm grading myself, I can't say that I deserve an 'A' for my efforts, but I'm far from failing either. To be honest, beating the Quad, Francis, and Maxwell is enough to make a man's lifetime, much less accomplishing it all in a day. Yet, my doubt that still haunts me, along with my incurable longings to be with Stephanie. I give my head a shake and snap back into the present. Thinking about Steph won't help me get through this anymore than giving heed to my doubt will. That same doubt I thought would be gone after I put it in the safe.
The safe!
After peeling out of bed, I walk over to it. It was supposed to be the solution to everything. Mr. C. guaranteed that once I put something in it, I would be able to move on and not look back. I'd no longer have to be confined or tormented by my past failures or my insecurities because I locked them away in the safe.
Maybe I misunderstood how it worked. I did just what he told me, following the instructions without flaw. Maybe the kera-films got old or something, unable to work properly anymore. I felt a little different for a while, but as time passed, the same old feelings of doubt and fear crept back into me.
My hands tremble as I type in the combination and open up the safe. Staring right at me, are the ghosts of Ziv past. Reaching in, I cradle the contents and take them from the safe. I place them on the desk and gaze. The words maintain their lifelike appearance as the silhouette of each red-tinged letter fluctuates in the solution. Frustrated, I scream, "Enough!" slapping them off the table. With a sigh, I dive back into bed with hopes of a morning that will reveal the insight into mastering the safe.
When I drift off, my sleep is interrupted by the familiar light knocking at my door. My heartbeat quickens and I jump from my bed and run to answer it.
"Hello…I mean good morning Miss Evans. Good to see you out and about again."
"Yes," she says with a beaming sunset smile. "I'm glad to be back, Ziv. As usual, it's time for an early morning meeting."
I'm speechless, staring at her as she speaks.
"Did you hear what I said?"
"No," I snap out of my daydream. "I mean, I did. I was just waiting for clarity."
"Are you feeling all right? You seem a bit clammy." Her gaze drops to the water dripping from my chin.
My hand rises automatically to catch the drip before it falls as heat floods my face. "I'm fine, really. I was just trying to straighten up a little bit.
