Chapter Twenty-One

Back at the house, Erin whirled around the place, putting her shopping away, answering phone messages and making sure that Nora was cleaning bedrooms rather than watching This Morning. When she’d established that everything was in order and PJ had left for the afternoon, she retired to her room to examine her wardrobe. She had no intention of changing into anything special that would give Sebastian the wrong idea. Instead she changed her sweatshirt for a new pink T-shirt. It was rather low-cut so she added a pink coral necklace and left her hair loose. Pink lipstick and a spray of perfume and she was ready. She swapped her trainers for a pair of white pumps and tied a white sweater loosely around her shoulders. That was better. Now she knew she looked good but casual. Meeting her own eyes in the mirror she paused, guilty. What was she playing at? Why was she doing this? It wasn’t too late. She could just not bother turning up. But that would be rude and make their relationship intolerable. It would be much better if she went to meet him and cancelled. Yes, that was definitely the answer.

When she arrived at the beauty spot, there was no sign of Sebastian. She fervently hoped he hadn’t decided to walk here or she’d have a long wait. She got out of the car and crossed over to the wall to enjoy the view. This was a much quieter and untamed part of the lake. The land surrounding it was rocky, the trees were tall and there were no houses for miles. It was a haven for birds and wildlife, though, and had many different trails that led both sides of the lake. It had been a while since Erin had been up here and she drank in the wild beauty and enjoyed the silence. It would be nice to write off the afternoon and follow one of those paths; maybe another day.

A long, piercing whistle made her turn her head and she saw Sebastian standing down near the water, beckoning to her. ‘I can’t stay, Sebastian,’ she called but he obviously couldn’t hear her. ‘Shit,’ she mumbled. She went back to lock the car and then picked her way down the uneven path towards him, wishing she’d kept her trainers on. She was slightly breathless by the time she reached him and more than a bit irritable. ‘Why on earth did you drag me down here? I don’t have time to go to lunch and stroll around the lake.’

‘Which is why I thought a picnic would be a good idea,’ he replied, waving a hand at the bags around his feet. ‘This way you don’t have too far to go, we don’t have to worry about bumping into anyone and we can enjoy the nice weather.’

‘Oh.’ Erin looked at him, wondering if his picnic would actually involve food or if he had other activities in mind.
