With the baby coming soon, I will be taking some time off of work. I don’t mind not working. I worry that, without me, my business will crumble to the ground, or that’s what I’ve convinced myself of at least. Though in truth, they’ve been able to function without me for weeks. They’ve done a great job with the daily shows, and the Friday deep dives more than exceed expectations, but still, I run a news company. I run stories most news outlets would never cover in fear of damaging the reputations of their corporate investors. I run a different kind of company, I run stories that matter, stories that target those same corporations. I don’t discriminate when it comes to lawbreakers. I try to be as unbiased as possible, a rarity in news as of late.

It wouldn’t surprise me that it was someone I did a piece on that wants me dead. With my word, I could end a company, demolish what was once clean and beautiful by proving it has been masking as filth all along. I speak the truth, and the truth has teeth, be careful or you may get bit. I laugh at my original tagline, oh how far I’ve come.

Nathan should be here any minute. He says he needs to talk and that it’s urgent. I’ve come to learn it always is.

Now when he wants to speak to me, I have to prepare myself for the worst possible outcome. He wasn’t happy with the confrontation between Derek and me, but I convinced him that I wouldn’t press charges. A lawsuit like that wouldn’t do us any good, especially right now.

Not ten minutes later, there’s a knock at the door.

It’s Nathan.

I wave him in and move to the seats in front of my desk so we can sit beside each other.

He has a laptop case hanging off his shoulder and his usual briefcase in his grip. He boots up the laptop and pulls out several newspaper clippings from the briefcase.

“People think they are so smart,” he whispers to himself. “Look at this”

He swivels the computer so I can have a better view.

It’s a feed of my building’s security, the time reads 2:32 A.M.

I watch myself walk through the office and take the elevator down.

“I’m confused. Why are you showing me this? We already know what happened.”

“You didn’t see it either. Watch it again.”

He plays it again.

“I don’t-”

“Where is the janitor you said you saw? Where are the signs that were on the elevators?”

I search for them, but they aren’t there. I also notice I’m wearing one of my gray suits. On the night of the elevator incident I was wearing a black one.

“So someone took the footage from a different night and copied it and played it over this night’s footage.”

“Exactly!” he says

“Now watch Kate’s feed.”

He lets it play through. I watch Kate leave her cubicle and walk swiftly to the elevator.

“She was wearing those clothes.”

“Exactly. I checked every floor for inconsistencies and yours was the only one manipulated with.
