Chapter Three

Her case didn’t show up the next morning, but a long narrow box did.

She recognised it, having bought it as routinely as she picked up shampoo or a bar of dark chocolate. She’d tossed it into her case without any real thought beyond ensuring she took it home with her. Riding crops were as much a staple in her life as toothpaste and tampons.

The note surprised her. Tell him I’m jealous, the lucky bastard.

The message chased a funny feeling through her, an echo of the chagrin she’d felt the one time she’d taken a few swipes at his white ass with the paddle he’d tried on her the session before. She hadn’t responded to pain, he hadn’t been very enthused about delivering it, and he’d insisted on switching up the next time, urging her to give it her all.

She’d hated it, almost brought to tears while he’d been rather stoic about accepting her blows. She, who could wield a whip like this with exactly the right touch to keep her mount in line, had thrown the paddle across the room in a temper and called an instant halt with a blurt of her safe word.

He’d had to coax and fondle her back into interest from a mutinous place, one a lot more dark and dire than when he’d reddened her backside. She’d merely been disappointed to discover a pile of swats did nothing for her. Hitting him with serious intent to leave a mark had made her sick.

So the note seemed off tone until she remembered how he’d said once, after she’d straddled his hips and ridden him with abandon, Your horses have any idea how lucky they are?

The remark had made her laugh and her mouth twitched now, while a pang of missing him went through her. Still, she was miffed enough to merely text, I want the rest.

No response, but later that day when she was checking her Twitter account, she found a photo tagged to her @. Saw this and thought of you. It was a spider web covered in raindrops, each one glinting in a beam of sunlight so it was a spectacular display of glinting diamonds, each strand delicate and weighted with dewy wetness.

She responded with a photo of a Black Widow then clicked to his profile, finding that he’d only opened the account that day.

Weird.

Searching further across social media, she realised she didn’t know enough about him to find him, not even his full name.

Growing more disturbed that her case was in his possession and not her own, she considered calling Barnaby for a background check, but thought better of it. He’d want to know why she was interested in Hayes and she didn’t want anyone to know they were connected or—more specifically—how they were connected.

A few nights later, her friend’s birthday was a small reprieve. Their party went on a crawl through the London clubs, which was a nuisance once the paparazzi got on their tail, but it was just the usual thing of them trying to catch a girl with knickers flashing or snogging someone inappropriate.
