Wesley sat home chewing his nails, waiting for his mother to get back from Mr. Wheeler’s house. What could be taking her so long?he wondered. She was probably giving him her usual speech about how bodybuilding was for muscleheads without brains. He guessed that she was telling Mr. Wheeler to leave her son alone and stop weight training him.

Wesley peeked through the curtain and saw his mother coming up the front steps. He raced to the couch and jumped on it, just in time to look like he had been watching TV when the door opened.

Bonnie Brown came in the room with a dazed look on her face. She looked like she had been sleepwalking. She didn’t say anything to Wesley.

“Are you okay, Mom?”

“Sure, I’m okay,” she replied. “What makes you think I’m not okay?”

“Your face is a little flushed or something.”

“I’m fine.”

Wesley waited for his mother to let him know the result of her meeting with Mr. Wheeler, but she just stood there.

“So, can I keep working out with Mr. Wheeler?” Wesley asked.

“Sure. I guess so,” she replied absently.

Wesley looked at his mother in disbelief. He’d never seen her like this. She was just standing there, like she had walked into a room and didn’t remember why she was there.

“Well, what did Mr. Wheeler say?” Wesley asked.

“He . . . invited me out for dinner,” she replied with a little giggle.

“He asked you to go out on adate?” Wesley asked, stupefied.

“What’s wrong with that? He seems nice. He’s about my age. He’s single, very handsome.”

“You’re going out with—” Wesley was about to say “Doctor Demented” but he caught himself. “You’re going out with mygym teacher?”

“Sure, why not? Oh, he gave me these . . .”

She pulled the tickets out of her pocket and handed them to Wesley.

“Two ringside tickets to The Rumble in Humble? Sweet! I thought youhatedwrestling. These are hundred dollar seats, Mom!”

“Think of it as your birthday present.”

“He gave you these? Did he . . . tell you much about himself?”

“A little,” she replied. “He’s into cooking and decorating. He loves classical music and he wants to be a doctor.”

He alreadyisa doctor, Wesley thought to himself. He’s Doctor Demented. And soon he might be my mother’s boyfriend.
