The foreign campaigns allowed Tuthmosis III to indulge his love of hunting – hippo and elephant hunting in particular. And he also seems to have had something of an interest in botany, revealed by the numerous exotic plants sent back to the gardens of Karnak Temple and carved on the walls of the so-called Botanical Gardens chamber. And like the exotic flowers he so admired, Tuthmosis III collected foreign women; for instance, three of his minor wives, Menhet, Menwi and Merti, came from Syria. Their joint tomb at Thebes, found intact by locals in 1916, was stuffed full of golden treasures, from crowns with gazelle heads, necklaces and bracelets, to superb drinking vessels, mirrors and pots of face cream. Yet, as minor wives, Queen Merti (whose name is the equivalent of ‘Martha’) and her two compatriots would have taken a back seat to the king’s Egyptian wives, the most influential of whom, named after her illustrious predecessor, was Queen Meryetre-Hatshepsut, God’s Wife and mother of the next king, Amenhotep II.
