Chapter Twenty
When Lawrey left work that evening, she didnât go straight home.
She lifted her hand and knocked on the door. She didnât want to be here, but she needed to speak to her ex-husband about their son.
Patrickâs new wife, Alyssa, answered the door. Lawrey remembered how old sheâd felt when sheâd been thirty. Sheâd already been a mom of an eleven-year-old boy by then and had been married for the same number of years. Sheâd felt middle-aged, but looking back now, she realized how young sheâd been. She wished sheâd appreciated it. The woman in front of her now seemed so youthful by comparison.
Alyssaâs expression fell when she saw who was at the door. âOh, hey, Lawrey. Can I help you with something?â
âIs Patrick in?â
âNo, sorry. Heâs out right now. Can I help?â
âNot really. I need to talk to him about our son.â
Alyssa raised a pair of perfectly shaped eyebrows. âYour son? Your adult son?â
âYes, you remember. The one whoâs closer to your age than Patrick is.â
She couldnât help herself. Something about this woman always got her back up. Was it that she was younger and prettier and had been the one whoâd ended up making Patrick happy? Probably.
Alyssa folded her arms across her annoyingly perky chest. âLawrey, Tommy is a grown-up now. Iâm sure whatever this is can wait. Itâs not like heâs a small child and the two of you are co-parenting.â
âNo, but heâs still our son, and weâll always be his parents, whether you like it or not.â
âFine.â Alyssaâs shoulders slumped. âYou want to come in and wait?â
She didnât, not really, but she really did need to talk to Patrick.
âFine.â
Alyssa stepped back, allowing her through the front door. It felt strange being inside a house that now belonged to Patrick but that also didnât belong to her. She couldnât see any signs of Patrick in the décor at all, not that Patrick was ever into all of that.
âYou want to sit down?â Alyssa said, motioning at the couch.
Lawrey perched awkwardly on the edge of it and sought her mind to think of something to say by way of conversation.
âSo, how are things with you and Patrick?â Lawrey asked eventually.
Alyssa curled her lip. âDo you really want to know?â
Lawrey glanced away, catching sight of a framed photograph of their wedding day on the wall. âNot really. Just making conversation.â
The rattle of keys in a lock caught her attention, and they both glanced toward the door as it opened. Lawrey was relieved Patrick was home.
He stopped short when he saw her. âWhat are you doing here, Law?â
âCan we talk in private?â
âWeâre in private. Anything you want to say can be said in front of Alyssa.â
âOh, for fuckâs sake.â Lawrey barely managed to stop herself rolling her eyes. âFine. Tommyâs got himself caught up in something. I assume you heard about that young couple who were killed earlier this week up at Sandtown?â
âOf course.â
âTurns out Tommy was sleeping with the girl, Emily. Only now weâve learned that the girl killed inside the trailer wasnât Emily at all.
