Jessie had screwed herself up to tell Bob what must have happened. He came over on Sunday morning after spending hours with the police and fire brigade. Neighbours had helped move a lot of the furniture to the garage, but everything was soaked by the firemenâs hoses. Jessie had put the piece of pork she had bought for herself and Kevin in the oven, and had prepared vegetables, for Bob must eat even though she wouldnât be able to swallow a morsel. She poured him some sherry from the bottle she kept for him, and with her face turned away from him, asked if the police knew who had set the fire.
âNo.â Bob sipped his sherry. Heâd really have liked a beer but Jessie had this idea that sherry was suitable. Sheâd soon learn his ways.
She turned to face him.
âIt was Kevin,â she said.
âOh Jessie, now think what youâre saying! Thatâs a very serious accusation to make,â said Bob.
âHeâd a reason,â Jessie insisted.
âHe may not like me, and he may not want to leave this nice home youâve had together, but thatâs a far cry from setting fire to my house,â said Bob.
âDonât tell me you didnât suspect him,â Jessie said. âNo one else could possibly have anything against you.â
âWell, the thought did cross my mind, I admit,â said Bob. âBut I dismissed it.â
âDid you mention it to the police?â
âNo!â He was outraged.
âKevinâs done it before,â said Jessie. âHe started the fire that killed his mother.â
âOh no!â Bob stared at her. âYou canât know that,â he said.
âIâm sure,â said Jessie. âBut it could never be proved. There was no trouble about it at the time.â
âHe was only a child.â
âHe was elevenânearly twelve. His mother had aâa friend, Leonard Davis, living with her. Kevin was jealous so he started the fire and his mother died. I donât suppose he meant to hurt anyone,â said Jessie baldly.
âBut thatâs dreadful!â said Bob.
âThe police thought it was an accidentâthe paraffin stove, you see, which Kevin had lighted in the night. Then heâd gone back to bed. But Len knew. And Kevin, of course. And I did, though I didnât let myself think about it. We never talked about it.â She thought of her burnt underclothes. âHe has lit other small fires now and then, when heâs been upset, but only little ones,â said Jessie. âThere was never any real damage.â
If she was right, thought Bob, the boy must be out of his mind.
âWhat are you going to do?â he asked.
âTell the police,â said Jessie. âHe canât be allowed to go on. Someone else may get hurt.â She remembered the scarf in his drawer, and its burn marks; how had that happened? âThereâs a meal ready,â she said. âThereâs no point in wasting it. Letâs eat first and then perhaps youâd take me to the police station, Bob.â
In some undefined way, Jessie thought that a delay, however small, might help Kevin.
