Back at the office, David updated the troops while Frankie contacted the Passport Office to request a copy of Nancy Carver’s passport application. The document had been paid for and processed, sent out to her Blanchland address on 15 December 2016. Scans of both the passport and application arrived in Frankie’s inbox minutes later. She made copies for the team, asking every MIT detective to examine the photo ID independently.

All but one agreed that it was her.

David withdrew to his office, taking Frankie with him. ‘We need to talk to the family,’ he said. ‘Question is: son or daughter?’

‘Her son was described in the misper report as, quote, “over-emotional at the time she disappeared, bordering on unpleasant”, unquote. The description irked me when I read it. What the fuck did they expect? His mum went missing at Christmas. Her presents were still lying under his goddamn tree. I can’t imagine anything worse, can you?’

David shook his head. ‘Given her ability to see the bigger picture, maybe Nancy’s daughter should be our next port of call. It’s cowardly, I know, but maybe she’d be better placed to break the news to her brother.’

‘I agree. Her married name is Hooper.’ Frankie held up a note. ‘I have the address.’
