When they returned to Carter House, Ira opened Samantha’s car door, took her hand, and helped her out of the car. When he tried to release her hand, she prevented him from letting go, so they walked up the steps hand in hand. John’s look of annoyance at seeing them together and holding hands was clear.

“Thanks for a great time, Ira. Hopefully we can do it again sometime.”

Ira hated to let her hand go. He gave it a gentle squeeze and dragged his fingers through her palm. “I’m sure we will,” he said.

As he walked back to the car, Ira thought, Well, I didn’t get a good night kiss, but it was sure worth it just to see the aggravation on John’s face.
