16.

Mark turned off his car’s headlights as they came to a stop. Naomi sat in the passenger seat, and Antonio sat behind her. Behind Mark, various shotguns and other weapons leaned against the seat. Five other cars came to a stop behind Mark’s, and everyone got out.

The main gate to the warehouse was about a quarter mile away. Everything was quiet, except for the soft clicks of gun safeties being turned off. Antonio handed Naomi a shotgun, and she gripped it tightly as Victor approached. “Doing all right?”

Naomi nodded, even though she knew if she took her hands off her gun they would shake. It was one thing to bust in on some drug dealers, but an all-out attack on a warehouse was different. It was a pseudo military operation. Something Naomi didn’t know if she was really ready for. But, then again, was anyone really ready to go to war?

“Two of my guys will take point. You follow behind them,” Victor said. “Once they cut the chain, we’ll all go in, find some cover, and open up on them. Got it?”

Naomi nodded again. What did she know about strategy and attack, aside from what basic things she learned at the police academy?

Victor signaled to two of his guys, and they moved up, Naomi and Mark following them, Victor and the rest of his men at their heels. The clacking of their shoes mixed with the pounding in her ears. She couldn’t remember the last time she was this nervous. As she ran, she felt the pocket watch in her pocket tapping against her leg. Its presence calmed her nerves some, remembering everything it stood for. Everything it meant to her.

“You sure you’re all right?” Mark said to her, keeping his voice low.

“Fine,” Naomi replied, staring straight ahead.

They rounded the stone wall that surrounded the warehouse and crouched down. Four large trucks with the word FALCO on the side of them were parked outside the gate. Another truck was parked inside the gate, and three men unloaded crates from it. Four more waited at the entrance of one of the large storage buildings, and two more walked along the side of it toward the front. Those not hauling the crates were armed with Thompson machine guns and BARs, likely some of the military cache.

“There’s some crates near the gate,” Victor whispered. “Take cover behind them, and stay spread out. If they took some frags, we don’t want one grenade taking us all out.”

“Jesus,” Mark said. “Grenades?”

“That’s why we need to take advantage of this surprise attack. Cut the chain.”

A man wielding a chain cutter cut the chain and eased the gate open. They all filed through, hurrying to hide behind the various stacks of crates and boxes.

Naomi and Mark took cover behind a shorter stack of crates and waited. Naomi held her shotgun against her chest. Her heartbeat picked up again, inching from her chest, into her throat, and to her ears. It pounded so loudly she barely heard Victor give the order—

“Now!”

Naomi and the others popped out from their cover and opened fire.
