We woke at the sound of the alarm, our legs entangled, with thumping headaches and furry mouths but no regret for last nightâs events. I imagined it would be difficult to let anyone touch me, but being with Jayden again was like being magically transported back to before Livvy died, when our relationship was blossoming.
âI better nip home and grab a change of clothes,â Jayden said, rubbing his forehead. He sat up in bed and I smirked at the sight of his bare chest.
âI think I still have one of your shirts in my wardrobe actually,â remembering heâd left one at mine before and Iâd washed and ironed it, sticking it in the wardrobe and forgetting it was there. I jumped up to check, instantly nauseous with the motion. It was a mint green Ralph Lauren shirt, still hung at the end of the rail, untouched for months. âHere it is. Your jeans are clean enough, arenât they?â I asked, picking them up off the floor and checking for any signs of mud.
âCome back to bed,â he giggled, looking at me, naked except for knickers and one sock that had managed to stay on.
I crawled beneath the covers and laid in his arms.
âIâm going to get fired today,â I sighed. Iâd taken it too far last night, shoving Amanda in front of everyone and calling her out. I regretted acting so impulsively.
âYou donât know that.â
âI do.â
âShall I order an Uber Eats McMuffin?â As though that was the consolation prize for my life going down the toilet.
âDefinitely.â
The flat was home again without Amanda in it and we made coffee and showered, waiting eagerly for our breakfast to arrive. Hurriedly munching it at the breakfast bar before brushing our teeth and heading to the office together. I was numb on the walk as though heading for my sentencing.
âDonât worry, she probably hasnât even told Chris about last night,â Jayden said, linking his fingers through mine. It was nice and we stayed that way right up to the front door, stopping as Chris and Fiona came out, deep in conversation.
âIâm not sure sheâs stable,â Fiona said, before catching my eye. âOh, hello, you two,â she said without skipping a beat, her cheeks colouring slightly.
âJayden, Ria, morning,â Chris greeted, following after Fiona, his brow furrowed. It clearly wasnât a good morning.
âMorning,â Jayden and I said in unison as they both hurried down the street.
âWhat was all that about?â I asked, pushing through the revolving door.
âNo idea, perhaps theyâre late for a meeting or something.â Referring to them rushing away. He couldnât have heard what Fiona said as she exited the building, heâd been behind me, but Iâd caught it. Had she been talking about me?
