CHAPTER 11

Too rattled to risk the cottage, where most of the ghostly aggression had manifested until the lighthouse, Mia headed toward the hotel at a brisk walk. If not for the fast-approaching squall, she would have preferred to stroll along the bluffs and through the meadows, desperately in need of nature and sunshine. For whatever reason, the thick forest—and the gloom within the close-set trees—left her unsettled. Usually, she loved nothing more than to spend time absorbing the calming energy of the old growth Redwoods. Their enormous trunks and impossible height gave her the sense of being safely cocooned. Not today, however. Would she ever feel at ease again? Mia shook her head. No. Not possible. Emmy’s suicide had severed life and ease irrevocably.

The wind increased to a gale, and the swollen black clouds dropped a deluge of cold hard pellets to the earth and drenched Mia and Ollie. Head down, she and the pup jogged the last few meters to the hotel. It took strength for her to pull open one of the double doors against the gusts, and the ferocious storm shoved it shut against her back before she could get all the way into the lobby. Her frustrated sigh at getting even wetter disappeared at the thought, and her lips lifted in a smirk. After another quick check around, she wriggled out of her soaked jacket and shook it out, much as Ollie had his wet fur. With the dog’s leash in one hand and the neck of the down jacket in the other, Mia strode toward the bar lounge.

It seemed the storm had sequestered most if not all of the guests inside the hotel, and many had chosen to ride out the tempest with a drink in hand. An antique Grandfather clock on the near side wall showed her the morning had advanced to lunchtime. No wonder the bar’s so full, Mia thought. They’ll open the restaurant in a few minutes. A head count showed her that 12 guests in all occupied the room. The honeymooning couple sat close together on the sofa she’d occupied the night prior. Rugged Otis sat on a bar stool with empty seats along the rest of the bar to either side of him. Even from the doorway, Mia could feel animosity emanating from him. She’d give him a wide berth. Birdy sat alone, looking morose, at a small round table in front of a window well away from everyone else. All of the remaining guests had pulled
