On the Monday of her third week at work, she wakes up at lunchtime. Her flat is stiflingly airless, and as the blinds are drawn she struggles for quite some time to figure out what is going on. Damn. She's going to miss him.

Cecilia gets off the bus and runs along the tree-lined drive. She stops to catch her breath for just a couple of seconds before she opens the door to the stables. There he is. Raftalid's equipment is hanging clean on the wall. William has the horse brush in his hand and is brushing Raftalid with vigorous, determined strokes. He doesn't raise his head to look her way as she enters the building. The heels of her riding boots echo dully through the room.

"So?" he says eventually, his eyes still focused on Raftalid.

"I can take over now", she replies flatly.

"You are 40 minutes late. It is out of the question."

"This is the first time it happens", she says, trying to sound nonchalant. He glances at her.

"Why did you apply for this job?"

"Because I needed a job."

"Are you being serious?" he blurts out. "Do you know how many people would want to do this?" He drops the brush on the floor and takes a few steps towards Cecilia.

"Do what exactly?" she whispers. There is no need for a louder voice than that, the stable is shrouded in silence. "Clean up shit from the horse that wins everything for you, but that you cannot be bothered to take care of?"

He says nothing, but comes even closer, and she can hear William's breathing as clearly as the heavy snorting of the horses.

"You have no idea of what we are doing here", he growls.

"Horse jumping?" she sneers. "There are other things in life."

When he takes yet another step forward, she backs out of the box. William steps out after her, slamming the door shut behind him.

"There are top-ranked jockeys that would resign just to be allowed to take care of this horse", he says proudly and looks down his nose at Cecilia with an expression depicting equal parts of disgust and fascination. Cecilia is well aware of that look. She too has had that very look for the last three weeks.

"Yet you chose me", Cecilia deliberates. Tastes the words one by one and lets them fill the room. "And do you know why, William? Because I don't give a shit about who you are."

William's face contorts into that expression that often plays on her mind, the expression of raw, uncontrolled emotion so far removed from what he displays to riding school pupils and photographers. It shakes her very core. She is burning up from within. Not only because of the heated conversation but also the fact that they are now just a couple of centimetres away from one another. She can feel the warmth from his body, the fumes of his riding effort. Cecilia looks up, her lips dangerously close to his.

"It's not my problem if you're not man enough to handle that", she mutters.
