chapter twenty

“Goddamn it, Frankie,” Evan shouted, scrambling from the floor, brushing what had to be a thousand shards from his clothes. “What the hell’s the matter with you?”

I couldn’t answer. My mouth was open, but no words came out. Evan stood six feet away, on the other side of the broken partition, his left hand pressed against his forehead. When he pulled his fingers away, a steady gush of blood flowed from a cut above his eyebrow, dripping onto his shirt. His sleeve was torn, a dark patch of crimson spreading down from the elbow.

“Oh my God,” I said, moving over to him, but he backed away, putting up his hands, making me stop. “Evan, wait. I didn’t mean to—”

“Jesus Christ, you really have lost your mind.” He swiped a few tissues from a box on the table and pressed them to his temple. They did little to stem the blood flow, and within no time they’d already turned scarlet.

“Let me help.”

“Get the fuck away from me,” he growled, grabbing some more tissues. When he noticed the state of his shirt, he let out another string of expletives, cursing me to the end of the world.

Before I could say anything else, two police officers, one male, one female, burst into the room and I suppressed a small groan. I’d met the woman at the scene of Patrick Davies’s house fire last night. She had the adinkra fern tattoo and had insisted I stay behind the yellow tape. I crossed my fingers behind my back, hoping she wouldn’t recognize me. Meanwhile, Blake looked triumphant.

“I’m Officer Kemp,” the policeman said. “This is Officer Armstrong, and—”

“That’s what you two were whispering about,” I said to Evan, failing to keep myself in check despite the authorities arriving, and pointing at Blake. “You were talking about calling the cops.”

Blake gestured to the glass. “Evidently, a good decision.”

“Sir,” Kemp said to Evan. “You’re bleeding.”

“I’m fine.”

“Want to tell us what happened here?” Armstrong said.

“Officer, this woman wouldn’t leave,” Blake jumped in. “She came looking for my colleague, Mr. Randell, and when he wouldn’t see her, she stormed in, trying to find him, and caused an absolute ruckus, ranting and raving, and—”

“Don’t you dare paint me as the hysterical woman,” I said. “I told you I needed to speak with Evan.”

“Speak with him?” Blake huffed. “You went ballistic. You damaged our property.”

“Name?” Armstrong looked at me as she pulled a small notebook and pencil from her vest.

I swallowed. “Frankie Morgan.”

“Frankie short for anything?”

“Francesca.”

She wrote it down and turned to Blake. “Please continue, sir.”

“Evan, uh, Mr. Randell, asked me to stay by the door, and when I heard Ms. Morgan shouting, I called 911 because things were escalating. Then the glass broke and—” he ran a hand over his face, shaking his head “—my God, Evan. We can’t afford to replace it. You know how much the previous tenants paid.”

“It’s fine, don’t worry,” Evan said. “We’ll work something out.”

“I’ll take a statement from you separately, Mr. Randell,” Kemp said. “But first we need to get your injuries taken care of.
