Aunt Alice took some money from her bag and handed it to Jane, along with a postcard. “Put that in, too.”

It was an image of the Wallace Monument, viewed from Stirling Castle. Jane turned it over and on the back were four words: Your loving sister, Winnie.

“The gift?”

Aunt Alice nodded.

Jane swallowed a tear and folded the money and postcard inside the piece of paper. Now it was her turn to glance outside. “Here,” she said, sliding the message across the table to Eileen. Her heart was racing. “Will he come soon?”

“Yes.” Eileen put the paper into her apron pocket. Then she sighed. “I’ll never see him again, will I? Whatever he decides.”

“Probably not, dear,” Aunt Alice said.

“If he comes to you, will you tell him I’m sorry? And ...” She sniffed. “... that I love him?”

Aunt Alice squeezed her arm. “Of course we will, dear. Of course we will.”
