Deborah appeared at Reception in the inn. She was well equipped with a rucksack containing food, map and warm, waterproof clothes. She was wearing sturdy walking boots. Amy the young receptionist was very eager to please.
âItâs such a lovely day,â said Deborah, smiling back. âIâm off up the fells. Can I leave details of my route with you? Iâm just going up on to Barden Moor and back down to the river.â
âOf course, madam.â Amy got a notepad and wrote down what Deborah had said.
âOh, good morning, Deborah,â said a voice behind her. It was Frances Cooper.
âGood morning, Frances. Isnât it a gorgeous day?â
Frances looked at Deborah in her walking gear. âYes it is . . . and I can see that youâre ready to go walking. I was going to suggest a trip into Leeds.â
âThatâs a good idea, but I canât today. Iâm all set up for the walk. Maybe tomorrow?â
âYes of course. Off you go and have a good time.â
âI will.â
After more apologies, Deborah left and almost immediately another person appeared at Reception. Candida Hayward had decided to stay for a couple of nights in the area to see how things panned out. She stopped when she saw Cooper speaking to Amy.
âOh my God, not you!â she said with contempt.
Cooperâs face fell. âCandida? What are you doing here?â
âI could ask you the same.â
âI came up here with Gerry; heâs directing the film.â
âOh, of course. And I suppose it was just a coincidence that Dan was here too. Did you manage it one final time then?â Her voice was getting louder. Amy was embarrassed and looked away.
âDonât make a scene, Candida. What is it to you anyway? You were about to divorce him.â
âIndeed I was. And why? Because women like you were always jumping into bed with him.â
Cooper walked away in disgust, and Hayward turned to the cowed Amy and proceeded to reserve a room.
