Chapter 6

“This friend of yours, what does he do for a living?” Grams asked.

“Todd and Mike were in the Army with me. Todd is an electronics expert. He has a surveillance security company. Mike is now with the FBI.”

“Big guns!” Grams said euphorically, getting the same amused reaction from Kate.

“Will they help us just like that?” Kate asked.

“Yes, they know I wouldn’t call if it wasn’t important.” Jo pulled her cell phone from her pocket and made the call.

“Hey.”

“Hello stranger, are you still pleasantly stuck in Wyoming?” Todd asked.

“Yes.” Jo looked at Kate, hoping she hadn’t heard. Kate pretended she hadn’t and smiled. Jo smiled, apologetically. “Did you get the pictures I sent?”

“Yes, I’ve been looking at them. Looks like a job from here.”

“I thought so too. Listen, I need your help.” Jo proceeded to explain the current events and asked, “do you think you can conduct a physical assessment?”

“When?” Mike asked. Kate wrinkled her nose, wondering who the other voice was. Jo mouthed in silence. ‘Mike.’

“Today,” Jo replied.

“Geez! You don’t give a guy much notice, do you? I don’t know if you’re aware of the fact that you are in Wyoming and that we are in Utah, and that a lot of snow has fallen from here to there,” Todd replied.

“I’m aware. But the situation is urgent, and when has a little snow been a problem for you? I suspect someone wants the Nolans out of their ranch, and they are going out of their way to make it happen. Kate said that, in the summer, there were armed men in the woods claiming to be hunters and moving equipment there. She thought they were building a hunting shelter of sorts. With what I see happening here now, I suspect that something is going on back in those woods. I thought that might be of interest to Mike. There are also sounds and tracks of what appear to be snowmobiles in the area. Anything else on the banker?”

“No, nothing more on him, we’ll be there ASAP.”

“Great. I’ll clear a pad for you.”

“Thanks.”

“You’ll clear a what? How are they going to get here?” Kate asked.

“Helicopter, Todd is a pilot. We need to clear a patch of land for them to land. Come on. We have work to do.”

“Okay.” Kate followed Jo outside. “Those are some friends you have to come here at the spur of the moment. How can they be ready so quick?”

“They are ex Army Rangers, Kate. They are always ready. And they know that if I call them, I must have good reasons.” Plus, they also want to see you and find out what’s keeping me here. She smiled.

“Are they very good friends of yours?”

“Yes. They are great. You’ll like them.”

They went to the barn, and Jo got on the small bulldozer with the snowplow and pulled Kate in with her. She drove the vehicle to a flat open area, a safe distance from the house and other structures, and began to plow the snow to make a good clearing for the helicopter to land.
