Lenny opened the door of the men's room and peered out. He could hear his mother and Kathy's parents talking in the waiting room. What was left of his heart melted at the sound.

Did I make the wrong choice back in Haven? Maybe when they talked of Christ and God and heaven I should have listened. Maybe I wouldn't have had to live the last two years in the shadows if I would've listened to their talk about the Light. Maybe if I'd made a choice for God instead of against Him, I would've been strong enough to say no when I was offered—

Lenny frowned. What exactly had he been offered? At the beginning it had seemed so clear. But now...what was he getting for his trouble? For his risk? For this alienation from his family?

Something about power. Wealth. Good times. Lenny didn't feel very powerful, and the only money he had was in his pockets. As for the good times? Sex. Booze. A bit of dope now and then. The memories were dim and hardly good.

Now little Lisa was hurting. His daughter. He couldn't even go to the room and comfort her. He had to stay away. Stay back. Stay in those shadows.

Lenny heard his mother laugh. She had a ridiculous laugh. High and grating. But it sang to him, flooding his mind with memories of home.

It's not fair, it's not fair, it's not—

Lenny was seized by an impulse. He didn't need to stay in the shadows any more. No one was forcing him to stay there. His boss was hundreds of miles away.

He backtracked to the restroom mirror. How did he look? He grimaced. He looked awful. Why hadn't he noticed it before?

His clothes were filthy. A pair of torn jeans and a scrubby T-shirt sporting a faded silk-screen ad for vodka. He tucked the shirt into his jeans and ran a hand through his hair. How'd it get so long? And greasy. When was the last time he'd taken a shower? He combed his fingers through his beard. His family had never seen him with a beard. If only he'd had time to plan, he could have shaved it off or at least trimmed it. He rubbed a finger over the front of his teeth trying to wipe away the film.

There. That was as good as it could get on such short—

Lenny paused. He leaned forward and studied his reflection. Something was missing ... His face was gaunt, his skin pulled tight against his skull. His eyes were shadowed sockets punctuated by pale eyes that looked as if the color of life had been washed out of them. He looked old. Very, very old.

What had happened to him?

He knew the answer to that. His life had been poisoned.

After the tornado, he'd found himself in a soggy ditch in the middle of a Nebraska nowhere. He'd staggered to his feet, soaked, bruised, and bleeding. Farm fields surrounded him on all sides. Stands of far-off trees broke the horizon. But no houses.
