Jstood up from his perch on the stairs and glanced around the yard. He was sure he had heard something in the night…He sighed and sat back down. Spooked was what he was. He’d tried to convince himself that it hadn’t gotten to him-that seeing Sam’s grave was just like seeing any of the graves of his boys who’d been wiped out on the street—but lying to yourself was like trying to run from yourself. You never got anywhere with it.

Just like the dark. How were you supposed to escape something that happened at the end of every day of your life?

He struck a match and raised an unsteady hand toward his cigarette, only to see the flame disappear, carried off by a gust of wind that came out of nowhere. He tossed the match and glanced around uneasily. He should’ve never agreed to meet at Sam’s place. It wasn’t just bad karma or the fact that the dark was creeping him out worse than it had ever done before. There was something in the air. A feeling that hung over him, like something was waiting…watching.

He jerked around, searching the area behind him. Someone was singing; he could almost make out the tune.

One of those eighties bands. Aerosmith? Rush? No, it’s Ozzy, and…I remember hearing a song of his coming from the dumpster behind that shack that day…Nearly scared the crap out of us—

“Where did that come from?” J whispered under his breath. Another memory…He continued to look around. If he wasn’t already certifiable, he might think he was going crazy. Can’t be going if I’m already there, he thought and almost laughed—would’ve laughed, but then he spotted Jonah coming around the corner.

J stood and braced himself for the confrontation he knew was coming.

“What are you doing here?” Jonah said, closing the distance between them. His eyes were red, and he was swaying on his feet a little, like his anger was all that was keeping him standing.

“I’m sorry about Sam, man—”

He saw a brief flash of movement behind Jonah and leaned a little to one side, trying to see around him. Whatever it was disappeared so fast that he wondered if it had been there at all.

“I said, what are you doing here?” Jonah demanded, stepping into his line of vision again.

So, this is how it’s going to be, J thought, shoving his hands into his pockets as he glanced back to Jonah. No “Thanhs for watching out for me,” no “Maybe we should talk about all this,” just “What are you doing here?”

“Guess I needed to come and get my head wrapped around all that’s happened,” he said finally. He hated lying to Jonah, but he didn’t see any way around it for the time being.

“Yeah? It’s funny how you just seem to be around every time someone in my family dies.”

“If you say so,” J said, narrowing his eyes. You and your Atupid temper, Jonah—He spotted the journal in Jonah’s hand and felt his heart begin to hammer.
