Chapter 3

“Alright now, son,” Sabrina’s father started after he’d invited Damien into his study to eat their breakfast together, away from the prying eyes of the rest of the family.

Damien hated to admit that he was relieved he wouldn’t have to face his inquisition with an audience that consisted of his sub and her siblings. Seeing him sweat would’ve had a negative impact on his stature in his relationship with Sabrina. The slip in her room had betrayed his desire to be good enough in her family’s eyes. He’d never wanted anything more. He worked hard to secure Sabrina’s submission, and he wanted to earn her trust every day for as long as they were together. This was his first step.

“I know you were very gallant and gentlemanly when my Bethany’s boyfriend was so rude to her at the donor party, but I want to know what you are expecting,” Joseph Sr. said, getting right to the point, his green eyes shrewdly assessing Damien. There was something about the way he spoke that had the Professor questioning the legitimacy of his words, like the way he emphasized boyfriend as if the word were in quotations.

Sabrina’s father was an imposing man in his own rite, just an inch or so shorter than Damien, his honey blonde hair peppered with a silver. His presence commanded attention, something Damien could absolutely respect. It was in her father’s presence that he was able to see where her desire to submit came from. She was right in saying she didn’t have daddy issues, just the stereotypical desire to find someone like her father. Joseph was someone Sabrina respected and loved, and he gave his daughter that in return. She wasn’t trying to fill something that had been missing in her childhood; she was looking for a deeper connection with her partner than she had with her family. Submission offered that to her. And suddenly, Damien felt like he understood Sabrina on a whole new level. He didn’t think he could feel any more deeply for her than he did, but being in the Hayward house, he felt closer to her than ever.

“I know it’s only been a couple of weeks since you met,” Joseph looked at the Professor with a twinkle in his eye that indicated more, “but you should know that waking up to you in my house on New Year’s Day sends a pretty clear message, son,” Joseph continued. “I want to make sure you aren’t leading my daughter on.”

“Of course, I understand your apprehension,” Damien nodded as they sat at a café table beside floor to ceiling windows looking into the heavily wooded backyard. A dusting of snow covered the ground and gray clouds hung overhead, signifying the coming of a storm. Damien hoped things would be less tumultuous inside the house. “I know it hasn’t been very long, but I already care for Beth, a lot. She’s a very special woman.”

“I’m glad we can agree on that,” he smiled, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes this time.
