CHAPTER SIX

‘SO HOW did it go?’ Jane asked the next morning as the two nurses were preparing for the day ahead.

‘Don’t ask,’ Helena told her ruefully. ‘Blake was called out by the police on his way to the cottage so that had to come first, which wasn’t really a problem. He let me go with him and I just sat around until he’d done what he had to do.’

‘Which was?’

‘There’d been a suspicious death at a hotel. A woman had fallen from a fourth-floor balcony and been killed. He seemed to think she’d been hit before she fell and once he’d pronounced her dead he left it to the police and we were able to depart.’

‘So what was the problem?’

‘He was. When we got back to the cottage he was all silent and peculiar but wouldn’t tell me why. I think he was regretting us meeting outside working hours. Not wanting to break the fast maybe. He insisted it wasn’t that, but there was definitely something on his mind, and after we’d eaten he went. So the whole thing was a big flop.’

‘I can’t believe that he didn’t want to be with you,’ Jane remarked thoughtfully. ‘I’ve seen the way he looks at you. You are just what he needs, Helena. Someone young, beautiful and kind, who will give him other children. Blake has been without someone to cherish him for too long.’

Helena sighed. ‘Maybe, but after last night’s performance I don’t think it’s going to be me.’

‘Time will tell,’ the other nurse said comfortingly.

‘Yes, I’m sure it will,’ Helena agreed flatly, as she watched Blake’s car pull up outside the practice.

What would he have to say today? she wondered. Would he have an explanation for last night? His behaviour had been totally out of character from what she’d seen of him so far. Maybe he was the type of person who went into sudden depressions and that had been her first experience of it. There were people like that. She’d met them in hospitals and clinics and knew that the black clouds could come from nowhere.

If that had been the case there was no sign of it this morning, she thought as he came striding into the nurses’ room a few moments later, his usual brisk and energetic self.

‘Good morning, Jane, Helena,’ he said pleasantly, but she noticed that he looked away the moment his glance met hers. Annoyance was beginning to uncurl inside her. The man last night hadn’t been the Blake she knew and the one with the evasive smile this morning wasn’t either. What was going on? She deserved to know.

Yet there was no way she was going to insist on it. She’d asked him what was wrong often enough last night, and now it was up to Blake to put things right between them. If he was going to behave as if nothing had happened, he wasn’t the man she’d thought he was.

As the day progressed they were both kept busy but Helena knew that he could have found the time for a quick word if he’d so desired.
