Chapter Seven

“Jesus,” Pete whispered. “She’s gorgeous.”

I clapped him on the back as we watch Sam walk down the aisle arm-in-arm with Joel. She certainly looked amazing. Her whole face was lit up as she stared at Pete. I looked at him to see the same expression of love on his own face. Maybe, this really would work out for them.

The ceremony was short but very nice. Joel and I did our best to remain solemn, but a few times, we caught each other’s gaze and couldn’t help smiling. If Sam or Pete noticed, they didn’t act like it. They had eyes only for each other. They said their vows, had their first kiss as a married couple then Joel and I threw handfuls of confetti at them as they headed out of the chapel together.

We had reservations at Gabi’s for the “reception”. After signing the marriage license, we headed over to the restaurant as a big, happy group. We were seated in a private alcove, and I ordered a bottle of champagne.

“So,” I said as the bubbly was being poured. “How does it feel to be a married man?”

“It’s great,” Pete said. He hadn’t stopped smiling since he’d first seen Sam walking down the aisle.

“You look beautiful,” Joel said to Sam, clinking his flute against hers. “I know I’ve said it about a dozen times, but you really do.”

“You make it seem like I usually walk around looking like a warmed-over corpse,” Sam laughed. “But I’ll accept the compliment and move along.”

“I think what he’s trying to say is that you’re always stunning, but today, you could make him consider going straight,” I said, reaching over to tap my glass against hers as well.

“See,” she said with a laugh, elbowing Joel in the side. “That’s how you give a compliment. Sheesh, it’s like pulling teeth with you sometimes.”

We joked and laughed with each other through dinner. Even Pete managed to have a civilized conversation with Joel about gambling. I leaned back and listened with my hand on Joel’s thigh as he explained odds and house advantage games to my brother. I hadn’t been this content in a long time.

“So where are you going on your honeymoon,” Joel asked Sam.

“Nebraska,” she said with a laugh. “Remember, we haven’t told his family yet.”

“What about your family?” Joel turned toward her, and they started talking about Sam’s mom and what her reaction might be to the news.

“Hey, Derek.” Pete tugged my jacket to get my attention. I leaned over so he could talk quietly. “I’m really sorry about earlier.”

“You don’t have to apologize, Pete. We both lost our tempers. It’s all right. Honest. And I’m really happy for you and Sam.”

“I know.” He smiled. “I really like Joel.”

I gave him a disbelieving look that made him laugh.

“I do. He’s a good guy. I just don’t understand what you’re doing.”

“Me, either.” I blew out a sigh. “I like him a lot, Pete.”

“I know you do. But you’re so damn scared of what other people think.
