It was the perfect weekend. Every moment, every experience were beyond anything I'd ever lived through.
It held a lot of first moments for me. First time I'd been to a cabin, first real woods experience complete with outdoor camp fires, first time sleeping in the hammock beneath the stars until I couldn't stop shivering.
I was living on borrowed time. I had to be. It was the only explanation for the turn about in my life. A tiny bubble of pressure occupied a small space of my heart, a warning that it wouldn't last. It couldn't. I didn't live fairytale lives.
"Stop it," Donny said, giving me a squeeze with his arms tight around me as we sat in front of the fire, our last night here.
"Stop what?"
"Thinking. You're so tense. Relax, listen to the song nature's serenading you with."
Months ago I would have rolled my eyes at his words. Nature serenading me? Who talked that way? Donny, that's who.
His hands ran down my arms, and together we listened to the wind, to the crickets and owls, to the creatures awake in the moonlight.
"Everything until now, doesn't matter, you realize that, right? It was all a lesson, but your life is different now. You are different. The girl you were when we first met has disappeared. That was the Old Starla. The hard crusted, sarcastic, locked up Starla." His voice was low, methodic, and full of pride.
"And new Starla?" I looked up at him, wide eyed.
I shouldn't need his approval, but I did. When he smiled, praised me, built me up, I was renewed, reborn.
I'd never felt like that before.
"Ahh, New Starla, completely unrecognizable from Old Starla. You glow with a vibrancy that's blinding, there's a peace in you that feels soul deep and something about you calls to me in a way I've never experienced before." Donny leaned down and kissed me, sparking lightning through my body with his touch.
When we finally pulled away from one another, his eyes twinkled.
I looked down and he held a small box in his hand.
My heart stopped. My breath disappeared. My mind stilled.
The universe collided into one moment, a moment where everything I'd known, everything I'd believed got swallowed up into a blackhole of nothingness and my future spread out before me, with infinite possibilities that were mine for the taking.
When my heart beat again, when my lungs filled with air, I realized Donny was speaking, saying words I couldn't understand. Words of love and forever and eternity wrapped around me in a warm embrace. Tears trailed down my cheeks and my hands shook as he opened the box to reveal a square cut diamond ring, the size of Manhattan Island.
His words didn't make sense. He loved me? He wanted to marry me? Spend the rest of his life with...me?
"Starla, love? Please answer, please say yes." The edge of Donny's lips tilted and there was a hiccup of doubt in his voice.
I half turned in my seat so that I could look at him directly.
"Are you sure, Donny?"
He placed his finger against my lips, to stop me from saying more.
