“Remember, we’ve both been in your shoes,” said Mora. “We know a lot about your life without asking. What we don’t know is the routine that Quentin keeps—and what keeps him going.”

Mora looked at Carol. “Anything else?”

“What foods does he avoid?” asked Carol. “Any he’s allergic to?”

Leigh saw where this question was heading and felt a bit queasy. “Well, let me see: He doesn’t eat beets. I found that out the hard way, when we were first married—he threw them at me. I had to trash my yellow silk blouse because I couldn’t get the red stain out of it.” Leigh thought for a minute, her fingers caressing her pant leg. “He told me once that he’s allergic to okra, but I’m not used to eating it so I’ve never had a problem with that.” Leigh shivered. “Isn’t food too obvious? And too close to me? I mean, wouldn’t they suspect me if he was sickened by food? I thought you—”

“We just want to cover all the bases.” Carol tapped on her keys a final time and removed the flash drive. “Let’s talk about next steps.”

Mora rose and walked to the window. She circled the large room and peered into the hallway from each of the three doors.

Finally she said to Leigh, “Carol and I will discuss the information you’ve given us. We may come back for more. We’ll call for a lunch appointment each time we need more details for the article. Under no circumstances will you discuss any of this with either of us on the telephone. Is that clear?” Mora’s pointed look willed Leigh to respond.

“Yes.” Leigh nodded emphatically. “Does that include all activities of the Outreach Committee?”

“Yes!” Carol and Mora both spoke at once.
