Chapter 16

Ana managed to keep to herself for the rest of the day. Even though she and Dove had two other classes together, it was head down and nose to the grindstone.

For the most part, it worked. By supper, they’d had no further interactions. At bedtime, Dove made a remark about how it was lucky for Ana that Headmaster Whitlock had been there to end things, but Ana merely closed the curtains around her bed and ignored the words.

“Ana.”

She halted on her way out of the mess hall the next morning. “Yes?”

Professor Gonderson caught up with her, and her heart started beating wildly. She had asked him a few times about Fyrenza, but each time he’d had no news to report. Was today different?

“Good news,” he said. “Fyrenza will be able to return home within the next few days. Thanks to how fast phoenixes heal, her wing is nearly in working order.”

“That’s wonderful,” she gushed.

So Professor Gonderson had gone to examine Fyrenza? He knew where the dragons slept?

It only made sense that he did. Out of everyone at Galfour’s Point, he was the person who worked the closest with them.

But it wasn’t as if he would ever tell her exactly where Fyrenza and the dragons were. That bit of information remained a secret.

“When? Do you think it could be today?”

He held his hands up, asking her to hold the questions. “It won’t be today, but soon. Perhaps this weekend.”

It was already Saturday. So he meant maybe tomorrow!

She had a sudden urge to throw her arms around his neck and hug him tight, but she resisted.

“Thank you, Professor.” With a new pep in her step, she ran off to tell her friends.

First up would have been Pepin. He’d joined a study group for economics, though, a class that she wasn’t in. They were currently studying in the library, and she wasn’t about to interrupt. She would just have to wait until they finished in a couple hours’ time.

Brax might have been the next person she told, but he was still in the mess hall having breakfast. Under no circumstances would she walk up to a teachers’ table. That mortifying act would only confirm Dove’s accusation that she was a teacher’s pet.

Which meant Ginger and Aelred were next.

Typically, she wouldn’t walk into Rocheport on her own. Not since Ionadi was still out there. But it was Saturday morning, and there would be other people on the road.

Plus, she had the talisman-- and she really, really wanted to believe it possessed the powers the old man claimed it did.

She half ran, half walked the way into town. As she’d predicted, there were a number of people on the street. Plus, the town was packed. She spotted no less than five Galfour’s Point’s students shopping or getting coffee.

“Ginger? Aelred?” Ana knocked on their door.

No answer.

Which was strange. Ginger had become borderline agoraphobic. Or maybe Field Day had changed that.

Taking the steps two at a time, she looked up and down the street. Sometimes Aelred worked on Saturdays.
