Chapter 32

What did he say?” asked Cristian.

“Let’s put it this way,” replied Curtis, squinting, his eyes adjusting to the brightness of the room. “What does it mean when the president of the powerful Bilderberger Group, who also just happens to be Vice Chairman of Goldman Sachs—”

“That would be James F. Taylor,” Cristian said mechanically, interrupting him.

“Sits on the same Board of Directors as the Chief Executive Officer of CityGroup and both are, somehow, tied into Octopus. Reid also told me that Schaffhausen Bank wasn’t their operation.”

“Then, there is someone else?” said Cristian.

“Yes, there is,” replied Curtis grimly.

Curtis looked at his friend. “They know about you. They know we came here. You are now involved. I have put you in danger.”

The banker sat forward, his eyes clouded, focused inward. Then, he struck a match, lit a cigarette and walked around the couch to pour himself a drink. “Most of my reasons to live died with my wife, until now. Don’t take this away from me, please.” He paused. “In any case, I am too high profile for them to easily do anything to me.” He smiled. “Now, what is it about this other group?”

“Someone new who joined the bidding. These were his words. He said that most have a lot of local clout. That’s how they wanted it,” replied Curtis. “When I asked him why, he said because it’s convenient and because most don’t know the real story.”

“And what does that mean? What story?”

“I don’t know.”

“Why didn’t you ask him to elaborate?”

“I was supposed to know the answer.”

“Lower rungs, the up-line, their controllers, then the Board of Directors. The classic set-up of every secret society.”

“What do you mean?” asked Simone.

Cristian exhaled noisily, then tapped his cigarette in the ashtray. “The organization is structured as circles within circles, with the exterior layer always protecting the more dominant inner membership that coordinates all operations. All of this, of course, is a euphemism for the creation of global networks of giant cartels more powerful than the very nations they supposedly serve, a virtual spider’s web of interlocked financial, political, and industrial interests.”

Curtis reflected on the world of greed and corruption teeming with characters whose moral compass was so utterly bent. He wondered how they ever sorted out the bad from the really bad amongst themselves.

“Reid made a curious admission, almost as an afterthought. He said that it wouldn’t have been an issue had Caroni not stumbled across the bank accounts.”

“Who is Caroni?” Michael asked.

“I don’t know.” Curtis replied. “Apparently, he illegally came into possession of an uncomprehensible amount of money which wasn’t his to begin with. ‘Until we get it back he won’t get out.’ These were Reid’s words.”

“Got back what … money?” Michael asked.

“I don’t know.” Curtis replied.

Cristian spoke softly, his words barely audible. “We have to get help. I know people in the government, important senators and congressmen, people in the new administration who owe me favors. They can help us. Let me talk to them.”

“No. The FBI, the CIA, Office of Naval Intelligence.
