CHAPTER 9
Charlie stood by her car, suitcase in hand. Without Zach, she felt empty. Sheâd already said goodbye to her siblings and nephews, and after one last glance at the smoke billowing from the Palmersâ cabinâs chimney, she deposited her bag into her trunk and closed it with a hollow thunk. Why did she feel so reluctant to resume her real life?
âCharlie! Wait up!â Kirk emerged from the Palmersâ cabin, wearing a brown leather coat and blue and tan tartan scarf that offset his hazel eyes and tawny skin. He sprinted her way. âI was hoping I could catch a ride home with you.â
âReally?â She looked around for his car, but couldnât see it.
âLayla took the BMW.â He answered her unspoken question. âAnd my heart,â he added with a fake laughâthe sort that used car salesmen made when they were trying to be chummy. âNot really,â he tacked on in a completely different tone. âIf itâs a problem, I can always hitch a ride with my parents, but theyâre not leaving for a day or two.â
She watched insecurities flash across his face. This was a side of Kirk she hadnât seen before, and she had thought she knew all of him. How many years had she spent studying him?
A lot.
And yet, this awkwardness was new. And unexpected.
âOf course. Iâd love some company.â
âGreat.â Relief flooded his expression. âIf you donât mind waiting just a second, Iâll be right back with my bag.â
Charlie opened the car door and slipped behind the wheel. While waiting for the carâs heater to kick in, she fiddled with the sound system, wondering what Kirk liked to listen to. How did she not know this? She had planned on listening to an audiobook, but with Kirk in the car, this was out of the question. Sheâd much rather listen to him than some silly murder mystery. What she needed was some nice background music so they could talk about their mutual interests. Which wereâ¦?
This was ridiculous. They were both healthcare professionals. Maybe heâd like to listen to a Ted Talk on nutrition. No. She wanted to talk to him and learn about his hopes, dreams, and plans for the future. Then she would tell him hers and try to leave out the fact that they all centered around her having his babies.
Instinctively, her fingers went to her lips. If she closed her eyes, she could still feel Zachâs burning kisses.
But those hadnât really happened.
Or had they?
She needed to talk to Zach. Why had he left so suddenly?
A cold breeze circulated through the car when Kirk climbed in. He settled his bag between his feet as if he had to keep it close in case he decided to jump ship. For some reason she didnât know how to define, this bothered her.
âSomething wrong?â Kirk asked.
âNo.â Knowing she was being ridiculous, she shook herself and put the car in gear.
âThis is nice,â Kirk said. âJust the two of us. I canât think of the last time weâve really had the chance to talk.
