Nutcracker Nibbles

Ingredients:

Dough (the Music)

1 stick cubed cold butter (1/2 cup)

4 ounces cold cream cheese

1-1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1-1/2 teaspoons sugar

Filling (the Corps de Ballet)

1 scant cup ground walnuts (or pecans)

1/3 cup sugar

2 tablespoons cream (or half and half)

¾ teaspoon vanilla (or almond extract)

1 egg, lightly beaten

1 teaspoon water

Finishing Touch (the Audience)

Confectioner’s sugar

Directions:

Put butter, cream cheese, and flour in a food processor and blend until dough comes together.

Note: Julia does this by hand, but life’s too short. Use the processor.

Form into a rectangle.

Wrap in plastic.

Refrigerate at least an hour until firm.

Combine well the ground nuts, sugar, cream, and vanilla for the filling.

Unwrap dough and roll out on lightly floured surface into a rectangle approximately 18 x 10 inches. Cut (use a pizza cutter to make life easier) into squares about 3 inches.

Note: Can cut into rounds using biscuit cutters.

Put a heaping teaspoon of filling in the center of each square.

Dampen each edge with water.

Fold in half and crimp closed with a fork.

Put on ungreased cookie sheets, approximately an inch apart.

Whisk egg with water to form an egg wash and brush over each cookie.

Bake 375° 12 minutes, or until the edges turn golden brown.

Cool on wire racks.

Dust with confectioner’s sugar.
