FOUR

Bastian paced in his living room. He’d left dozens of messages, possibly closer to a hundred on Nicole’s phone over the last few months, but she had never returned his calls. What had happened with the Elders must have been traumatizing for her. At least she had Stephanie for therapy still. If anyone could get through to her, it would be Stephanie.

He breathed in deeply, checked the time, and then grabbed his keys and headed out for his session with Stephanie. Even after two months of therapy he dreaded facing the woman he’d tried to murder. How she showed him any compassion was a mystery, but she always did.

Seemingly on autopilot the whole way to Nocturnal Surrender, his Beast of a Hummer cruised the Langsford Strip without much thought from him. When he pulled in, Johnathan’s motorcycle sat beside Stephanie’s car.

“Great. Just what I need.”

Other than the last meeting, he hadn’t faced the newly-instated Enforcer since being in front of the Elders for sentencing—after Johnathan had shot him full of silver. Sure, they had been civil with each other at the meeting thanks to Stephanie and Alex, but that didn’t mean Bastian wanted to see Johnathan unless it was work related.

Before Bastian made it to the back door, Christof Rosenbaum’s limo pulled in. The driver emerged and opened the door for the pompous bastard. Bastian should have gone inside to avoid a confrontation, but part of his therapy was about coming to terms with his past, and forgiving the bastard. It was time to see if the uneasy truce between them would hold up when it was only the two of them, with no referees.

Rosenbaum strutted toward Bastian, a smug grin on the Enforcer’s face. He glanced over at Stephanie’s car and the motorcycle. “Well, well... Nice to see we’ve all made it for therapy. And how lovely of you to wait for me.”

Bastian glared at the bastard. “What the fuck are you talking about?”

“Now, Bastian. I hope you don’t use that filthy language around Stephanie or Nicole.” Rosenbaum strode past him and went inside.

Bastian waited a few minutes, pacing again, clenching his fists, and trying to remember the techniques Stephanie had taught him to control his anger and impulses.

Two months of therapy hasn’t been enough. I want to tear that fucker’s head off just like he took off Elise’s.

After a few deep breaths, another set of headlights shone into the back lot. He hardly believed his eyes as Nicole pulled in and parked—far away from his Beast.

His breath caught in his chest as his angel stepped out of her car. Her dark hair cascaded over her shoulders. Her tight jeans made his cock ache. But more importantly, the pain in her blue eyes tore at his heart.

He wanted to rush over, grab her, and never let her go, but he resisted.

The pieces started falling into place. Apparently this would be a group therapy session, but who had made that call?

Nicole stopped a few feet away from him. “I’m not here because I want to be.
