By moving an old red Naugahyde couch and a couple of other things in the furniture-storage room, the Amazing Rumblers had space to stand as if they were on a stage. They practiced on Saturday afternoons and one night during the week.

Their first real-live gig—at the Youth Center in Whittier—was on a Friday in June. Several parents had formed a club for teenagers who were too young to drive. They all gathered at the Ruritan building on Saturday nights from six thirty till ten and danced to .45 records: “April Love,” “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” “Long Tall Sally.” Parent chaperones provided punch and cookies on a long table. At one end of the dance floor was a Ping-Pong table for the boys. The Amazing Rumblers were the Youth Club’s first live act.

Dwayne’s daddy had constructed for Willy, the bass player, a speaker cabinet that held two twelve-inch speakers. He’d also made a cabinet for the glow-tubed innards of a jukebox that served as a speaker amp for Ray. Mickey Dean had a store-bought amp for his guitar.
