Lydiaâs second installment of âThe New Rules of High Schoolâ was about âplexing,â which was sneaking into different movies at the cineplex besides the one you paid for. It was also about how boys like the stupidest movies and go see them over and over. And how all the actresses now have implants to enhance their breasts and why canât guys get implants to enhance their brains. It was a big hit. It was all anyone talked about. So far, Lydia was carrying the paper.
Her third column was about Nathan Reimer. It was called âThe Hot Jock.â It was a list of the reasons Nathan was a âhottie,â the reasons he was a âbiscuit,â the reasons he was a total âspaniel.â I didnât know girls were calling guys âspaniels,â or even what that meant. But that didnât matter.
âWe canât run this,â I told Lydia, when Iâd finished it. âThis is a personals ad.â
âItâs a column.â
âNo, itâs not.â
Lydia stood over me. She had come to the Owl office to show it to me. She was suddenly hanging out there a lot.
âI think itâs fine. I think people will like it.â
âItâs not appropriate. It puts Nathan on the spot. We canât have people writing love letters to individual people in the school paper.â
âYouâre jealous,â she said. âYouâre jealous and you donât like me writing a column anyway.â
âIâm not jealous. What would I be jealous of?â
âNathan.â
âIâm happy for Nathan. Heâs bringing honor to us all.â
âYouâre jealous that I like him now. And not you.â
This was an interesting statement. I wondered if it could be true.
âAnd youâre jealous that people like my column.â She snatched the paper from me. âIâm going to ask Mr. Owens.â
That night, Lydia called me at home. âIâm sorry I said you were jealous,â she said.
âItâs all right,â I said. âWhat did Mr. Owens say?â
âHe agreed with you. Of course. Nathan is a total hottie though.â
âI know. The girls are all over him in the cafeteria.â
âWhere did he come from? Nobody knew him last year.â
âHe was injured. Something with his foot.â
âItâs weird how people become popular all of a sudden,â she said.
âWhen I broke up with Cindy, I was so sure she was about to become super popular.â
âDid she?â
âNo. She kept being Cindy.â
âWhatâs she doing these days?â
âI donât know,â I said. âI never really see her.â
âBut you guys must talk.â
âShe doesnât seem to want to.â
âShe probably still likes you.â
âI doubt that.â
I could hear her moving around in her room. The radio was on behind her. âWait, so why canât we run my piece about Nathan again?â she asked.
âYou canât do stuff like that in a school paper.â
âYou sound like a teacher.â
âIn a way, I am.â
The next morning I talked to Jill St. John in the parking lot. She was working with a new anarchist environmental group called Anarcadia. They were spiking trees in British Columbia. She was going to write about it. It was illegal of course, but it sounded cool, and I told her we could find a way to cover it in the Owl.
