CHAPTER 10

Halfway back to their house she realized how drunk she was, and while she felt terrible about everything that had happened at Gabe’s house, she decided she was doing the right thing by going home. Going home and confessing everything, and then never, ever stepping in these waters again.

Michael walked behind her, and she could feel him watching her. What was he feeling? How would he react when he found out that she had actually done what she had done?

It wasn’t as if he hadn’t implied that he wanted her to do it, right? She couldn’t be blamed for that.

But she still felt incredibly guilty.

She pushed the door open and marched into the living room. It wasn’t in her nature to be confrontational, or to head toward a problem, but her husband’s words had chilled her: as long as you always tell me about it.

She didn’t like any of this. She didn’t like feeling out of control, or being controlled by carnal instincts. She didn’t like risking her marriage. It had all seemed so fun just weeks ago; now it seemed too dangerous, too wild. She would confess to what had happened, hope that Michael could actually forgive her, and they would get on with their lives.

She whirled around. “Something happened over there,” she said quickly, wanting to get it out before she had time to stop and think about the consequences or chicken out. “I don’t… I don’t know how it happened, but it did, and I wish I hadn’t done it now.”

Michael closed the door and stood by it. He was still in the kitchen. She couldn’t get any sort of read on his face, whether he was angry, or turned on; disappointed or salaciously thrilled. Almost every one of those emotions seemed to play on his face.

He walked toward her, and for the first time ever in their marriage she sensed something almost menacing about how he was walking toward her.

But even more unimaginably, she was turned on by it.

“Did you do something bad, Raine?” he asked.

It was a hungry, sexually-laden question. There wasn’t any doubt about that.

She felt the same paralysis that had overcome her at Gabe’s house taking over her again. An inexplicable arousal, and at the same time a humiliating sense of guilt. The only problem was… the two sensations were combining together in a way that was… well, pleasurable.

“I don’t know how it happened,” she said.

Her husband, who had always been an attractive guy to her, of course, was moving toward her with a cat-like, prey-chasing energy. She wouldn’t have gone so far as to say she liked it, but it was turning her on anyway. Her stomach felt like a jiggling bag of ice cubes, something she hadn’t felt for so long she had almost forgotten how thrilling a sensation it was.

“And what is it that happened?” he said, close enough to touch her now.
