Chapter 18

There was a sort of excitement in the air of the stuffy, dimly lit cabin. Nola’s eyes darted between the faces of the cloaks. What has gotten into them? What did they do?

“Our benefactors actually think the red power has potential,” Derek said, his face taking on that slightly manic expression he got when he was playing with fire. “We are one step closer.”

Adam and Jeanine both stood slightly taller at the news. Cameron’s eyes darted to Nola before he hastily looked away again. Nola made a point to study Jeanine’s impractical wedge heels peeking out from the edges of her cloak.

To do what exactly? Nola itched to say, but she kept her mouth closed. He’s almost…happy. Maybe he will let something else slip—

A sudden burst of energy filled the ground below them. Glowing lines stirred in the soil. The roots, Nola just had time to think before they burst from the dirt floor. She jumped back with a cry as one nearly tangled in her hair and another coiled around her feet. Jeanine screamed bloody murder, while Adam and Derek dove for the door. Cameron kicked at the roots twining their way around Jeanine’s legs. Nola ducked out of the cabin just ahead of them.

Once outside, Jeanine pushed Cameron’s arms away and took off, awkwardly tottering on her heels. Cameron gave Nola a questioning look. She gave him a shrug back and waved him away toward the others, hoping he would take the hint and let her go in the opposite direction in peace.

Cameron nodded in understanding and started toward the others. Nola broke into a jog in the direction of home, knowing she should play the part of terrified human and wanting to be as far away from Derek as possible.

It took a while for Nola’s heartbeat to slow. A warning would have been nice, Nameless. There was something about roots bursting through the ground to tangle at her feet that was truly terrifying, even though she knew who was behind it. But a small smile found its way to her lips as she thought of their terrified faces.

Then the smile slipped as Nola shook her head. It definitely scared them, but was it the right move? It may just have scared them away from the cabin. I would’ve told her that if she listened.

She made her way to the part of the wood that ran behind her backyard. Lost in thought, she almost missed the dark figure that waited for her at her back fence.

“You did this,” Derek said, face almost invisible in the darkness.

No, no, no. Nola backed up a step at his tone, heart in her throat.

“I can’t do anything like that,” she struggled to keep her voice steady.

“When did you become such as accomplished liar?” He stepped menacingly towards her. “Who else could have done that? There is no one else that even has the possibility of having that kind of power. It was like the gray power times ten.”

Definitely the wrong move, Nameless, Nola thought frantically.
