It took Susan a few months after her dismissal to reset. Free of the daily abuse at PKC Group, she felt her depression lift. Her departure from PKC Group had been abrupt but without incident, and her resignation had been portrayed as voluntary and for personal reasons.
Removed from the source, she didnât know what was currently happening within PKC Group, but she could only assume Berger was continuing his deception in order to parlay another much larger round of financing, perhaps even a sale of the entire enterprise.
Fortunately, Susan had applied and been accepted back as a teaching professor at MIT. It felt good to be back on campus and surrounded by bright, inquisitive young minds in all their wonder and innocence. Still, somewhere within, she was not at peace with herself. Whenever she was not occupied with her teaching obligations, the issue of Bergerâs corruption consumed her. She fantasized about different strategies to take him down but somehow preserve the viability of the core compound research.
It was a perplexing conundrum. Berger and the research were so intertwined that it was difficult to see any scenario whereby they could be separated without killing the project. Beyond that, there were the legal considerations. She was no longer bound by the noncompete now that a year had passed. More problematic was the confidentiality clause in her contract. There was no time limit on that. It always came down to a binary choice. She could opt for the traditional whistleblower approach and risk losing everything, including her own career and the research itself, or she could walk away.
It had been a good day as Susan returned to her apartment. There were a couple of kids in her class with real promise, and it gave her a sense of joy and deep satisfaction to mentor them. They had more or less self-selected themselves for her extra time and attention; they were always prepared, always inquisitive, and constantly came to her office whenever she was available for further discussion. Susan saw a little of herself in each of them and vowed she would never do to them what Berger had done to her.
She enjoyed their enthusiasm and appreciated their dedication. Finding a cure someday was still her number-one professional priority, but she was surprised and excited at how the act of teaching had renewed her. It was healthy to be able to look to the future with hope. In fact, as she thought about it analytically, she realized forward-looking hope and a purpose in life were probably the simple keys to mental health. Berger had taken that away from her, and now the kids were restoring it.
Her depression faded. She was able to look at her issues with Berger more objectively now that she was distanced from him. A satisfying solution still proved elusive, but her mind was able to contemplate the complexities without the despair that had plagued her while she worked at PKC Group. Sometimes consciously but perhaps more often
