SIXTEEN

Police Precinct

Monterrey, Mexico

THEY SAT AT THE side of the four-lane street in front of a small Mexican takeout restaurant, eating tacos and watching the locals go about their daily routines, working and haggling with patrons at the nearby strip mall. Away from the city center, beaches, and upscale resorts, it wasn’t a prime tourist destination. But they got the occasional American passing through that part of town on their way elsewhere. Monterrey was crawling with cartel members and crooked cops on their payroll.

Rob’s eyes were glued to a newspaper he couldn’t read, and he was hearing people around him whom he couldn’t understand. But the paper covered his face well. He didn’t want to spook the man before they could talk. It wasn’t by accident that they were across the road from the police station. They were waiting for a particular officer to show. And so far, it was the one and only option they had. Rob knew much of the police force and departments in Mexico were dirty, whether they were coerced or just did it for the money.

So far, Rob had gotten little in the way of information. And he was losing his patience. Somebody was going to talk. They waited around for most of that morning, watching every person who came in and out of that place. But Rob figured he had to leave sometime.

“Hey, bro,” Rob said to Kyle while they had a few minutes to talk. “I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate you being here with me.”

“Of course, man,” replied Kyle. “Why wouldn’t I?”

“No, I mean it, man. I couldn’t do this without you. And Marianne is going to know that when we find her.”

“Don’t worry, Rob. We’ll find your sister. She knows you. So do I. I’m sure she’s just waiting for us to come to her rescue.”

Hopefully she’s not hurt, Rob thought.

Rob just hoped that Kyle was right.

He recalled the last mission they were on together. He’d thought about how scared those people were when they freed them. The more he reflected, the more irritated he got. Rob could only wish that, wherever Marianne was, she wasn’t suffering.

This mission wasn’t sanctioned. The two men were on their own. But Rob had little time to wonder what would happen when it was all over. He would give his life to protect his family, what little family he had left. And, if required, Rob would go to prison for it.

They were sitting outside, near a white Toyota Tacoma pickup they’d stolen from a motel parking lot earlier that morning. Rob was just finishing up his food and drinking the last bit of beer in his plastic cup. Rob covered his face with the paper, his eyes peeking over the top of it. He spotted a gentleman in uniform, walking away from a group of police officers through the vast complex’s entrance, surrounded by a ten-foot concrete wall with barbed wire on top.

“Heads up,” Rob told Kyle in a quiet voice so nobody around would hear.
