Chapter Thirteen

In a small, dingy motel room on the south side of Cleveland, Robert Daniels and John West sat on the beds drinking cheap beer. Empty bottles were scattered about the floor, and a half-eaten sandwich had been smashed into the carpet.

It was late in the evening, and the boys had been drinking since they arrived in Cleveland nearly eighteen hours earlier. It was incredibly lucky that the young woman at the desk did not recognize them. By then, every early morning edition of every newspaper in the country had their pictures on the front page. Even though no evidence was found that positively linked the boys with the Niebel murders, the media still ran the story. To avoid the possibility of future litigation, they generously used the word ”suspects.” With the strong evidence and the eyewitness accounts that linked them with the Ambrose murder, they felt confident that they were safe by including the Niebel murders as well.

West drained the last drop from his bottle of beer and threw it across the room. It crashed against the plaster and lathe wall leaving a small hole and sending splinters and shards of glass flying across the room. He opened another and gulped from it.

“This beer is warm,” said West. “We need to go find cold beer. Maybe we ought to go find a bar. I’m getting hungry.”

“Are you crazy?” asked Daniels. “Everybody in America knows what we look like by now. We’d be spotted in a minute.”

“Well, what are we going to do? We’re going to have to leave this place sometime.”

Daniels slurped his beer. “We’re going to hold up here in this room until tomorrow night. Then, we’ll leave under the cover of darkness.”

“It’s dark out right now. Why don’t we leave town while we can?”

Daniels held out both arms spilling beer on the bed. “What’s the matter with this place? Let’s just rest up a bit.”

“Where are we heading tomorrow?”

“We’re heading west, young man. Gettin’ the hell out of this state.”

“Let’s go now.”

“No, I kinda like this place. Besides, maybe we can find some girls.”

“I don’t think so,” muttered West.

“Why not?”

“You know why.”

“No, I don’t. Tell me.”

“I’m ugly. That’s why.”

“Peggy didn’t think so.”

“Yes, she did.”

“What are you talking about? She let you screw her.”

“Don’t forget. She thought I’d lost my mother. That was a mercy screw.”

“What the hell makes the difference as long as you get laid?”

“I suppose you’re right.”

Daniels chugged his beer. “Don’t forget. Women will fake an orgasm to get a relationship, and men will fake a relationship to get an orgasm.”

West sprayed beer as he broke out in laughter.

“You know what would really be fun?” asked Daniels with an evil smile. “You’re screwing some girl, and just as you finish, you pull out a gun and pop her in the head.”

West snapped his beer from his lips. “That’s sick.”

Daniels formed a gun from his hand and pulled the trigger three times. “You didn’t think it was sick when I popped those three in the cornfield.”

“As a matter of fact, I almost threw up.
