Countdown

On every front, in every department, and in the nerve centers at Fox and APJAC, actors, director, supervisors, craftspeople, carpenters, assistants, and many others were at work readying cast and crew and materials for the production shoot—now scheduled to begin on May 18, for an Easter 1968 release. (One item on Jacobs’s to-do list was paying artist Mentor Huebner the $600 he was owed; however, Huebner was not given a role in the art department beyond sketch artist.)

Some crew shipped out to the location in Page, Arizona, a small town on the Utah-Arizona border, several weeks before the launch date to get everything ready. A small flotilla of aircraft was flown in for second-unit aerial work to simulate the spaceship’s crash; equipment and crews were provided by Tyler Camera Systems, pioneers in aerial filmmaking techniques. Because of the high temperatures and altitude of the location, they found at first that only a jet helicopter would be able to perform the necessary acrobatics. Abrahams asked Tyler to construct, as quickly as possible and to the tune of $13,000, a special version of the industry-standard Tyler Vibrationless Camera Mount that could be installed in a Bell Jet Ranger helicopter.
