“Now where is Connor and Nadra?” I growled as I leaned against the locked van. The rain hammered down. “Doesn't anyone have a spare key?”

“Nadra and Annabeth do,” Dalia answered as she stood beneath an umbrella with the other concubines.

“And Connor didn't appear in any of his classes?”

“Nor Nadra,” Dalia said. “She wasn't in our afternoon history class.”

“Sorry,” Professor Rennes shouted as she ran up beneath her clear umbrella. “Nadra gave me the keys before she left.”

“Left?” I asked. “You didn't mention that during English.” I had English with Professor Rennes in the late afternoon while Nadra and Connor took her midday class.

“Yes, the pair ran off. I assumed that they were...” Her cheeks crimsoned.

“Fucking?” I finished.

“Did they leave together or separate?” Dalia asked.

“Separate.”

“What does that matter?” I asked.

“It's Connor's mother,” the succubus sighed. “I talked with Annabeth about her this morning. I think...she might be like a succubus.”

“That's why Connor was acting so...weak,” I growled. “She has some sort of hold on him?”

“Well, she did raise him,” Dalia pointed out. “I don't know why she did that. I'm not up on other creatures' predilections.”

“That fucking bitch,” I hissed. “Connor went to her and Nadra followed.”

Dalia pulled out her phone. “Let me call Annabeth. Maybe she found out something.”

I waited as the rain poured on me, rolling off my jacket. My jeans were already soaked and my tawny hair was plastered about my neck and cheeks. I didn't care. It was just the rain. As a pup, I played in the wet woods around Buckley. Wolves didn't hide from the rain.

“Well?” I asked.

“She's not answering. It went to her voice mail.” Dalia swallowed. “What's going on?”

“Yes,” Alex nodded, the cheerleader concubine clutching to Desiree, another concubine.

“Don't start crying,” I snapped. “Everyone in the van. We'll drop you off at home and then we'll head to the Daniels and find out what's going on.”

“Who's we?” Dalia asked.

“Me and you,” I snarled. “If she's a succubus, she shouldn't be able to affect you.”

“She's not a succubus,” Dalia responded. “But you're right. I'm hard to dominate.”

A smile flashed across my lips as I remembered Connor doing just that. “Okay. In the car and let's go.”

I snatched the keys from Professor Rennes, rounded the van, and unlocked it. I hopped it and hit the power lock button. Metal clicked and doors were yanked open. Dalia climbed into the passenger seat, folding up her umbrella behind her. Fear crossed her beautiful face. She would be my secret weapon to save our mate.

The van's sliding doors slammed shut. The concubines were all buckled into the back. I backed the van out and raced through the parking lot. The windshield whispered as they swished back and forth, keeping the window clear during the downpour.

It was time to have words with my mother-in-law and show the woman how things worked here. She messed with the wrong daughter-in-law. I snarled as I took the hard turn onto the street and floored the gas.
