Chapter Thirty-Five

David and Christine and Quentin and Mary all sat in silence nursing a stiff drink.

It had been a few hours since the cataclysmic event at the Tooting Bec Lido.

The conversation was minimal. All were speechless from what they’d witnessed.

After fleeing the pool, they’d agreed to watch the nightly news together, to see how the story would be covered.

When the clock chimed six, Mary turned on the television and returned to the couch. Her heart beat faster as the seconds ticked by.

What happened had been her doing, she’d been telling herself all afternoon.

After a thirty-second intro, the BBC evening news began.

‘Good evening. Bob Freeman, along with Frances Brown, with the news this Sunday the 24th of June 1990.’

The major news stories being covered that night were read out first in summary.

Mary wondered if what happened at Tooting Bec Lido had actually made it on, when they’d got to the sixth news story but nothing of it had been mentioned.

It was the last major news story.

‘And lastly, we’ll cover off the accident at Tooting Bec Lido today,’ said Frances Brown, ‘which has resulted in the deaths of two people.’

All four shared curious looks.

They’d have to wait about fifteen minutes to be put out of their misery.

But the news story right after the Tooting Bec Lido ‘accident’ would have the four falling off their couches.
