Nawaz stood above his mother as she lay on the hospital bed. She was hooked up to a breathing unit. A slender white tube emerged out of her mouth and trailed along the bedsheet before falling off the bed and disappearing beneath it. Stats and graphs that he couldn’t understand were glowing holograms, numbers and letters suspended in midair around her body. Most of them were red. Her chest rose and fell in sync with beeps on the overhead display.

She had the sense to send out an emergency ping to him, thankfully. He had reached home having pushed the piece of shit car to its max, and had found her strewn across the kitchen floor. The kitchen smelled bad; the curry she had been cooking had overflown from a pot on an open flame and was sizzling when he had entered.

One of the ominous holographic series of numbers over her body turned green. As he watched she took a deep breath. A hiss from the tube as it pulled out of her mouth. Her eyelids fluttered. He moved closer and held her hand. She opened her eyes, groggy, and looked up at him, a slow smile spreading across her face.

“My star,” she said, at about a tenth her normal volume.

“Easy now, take it easy,” Nawaz said. It killed him to see her so frail. He smiled anyway.

“I don’t know – what happened.”

“You fainted and fell is what happened. And you messed up the curry.”

“Oh no.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll still eat it. Remember anything?”

“I was cooking, and…” slow shakes of her head, “no, I don’t.”

“Well, Dr. Zafar is on his way. We’ll know what’s happening soon enough.”

“Nawaz, where are we? This doesn’t look like the hospital.”

“It isn’t. You’re at the Doctor’s private clinic. He’ll take better care of you here.” And no meat-headed fucks will find you either, he didn’t add.

“That’s going to be expensive, Nawaz, why -”

“Shh,” he took her hand in both of his, leaned down, and kissed her forehead. “You rest now. I’m going to find that useless Doctor.”
