When he and Jawhar went back to prison after failing to find work, Bakhit went to see Father Johann. He tried cautiously to get him to talk about her. Father Johann had told him everything about her several times over during the previous two years, but Bakhit never tired of trying to slip her into the conversation. Father Johann knew his tricks, but he didn’t begrudge Bakhit his efforts. He told him about their journey from Suakin to Khartoum and Bakhit reveled in the memories. He knew the stories by heart, so much so that they had become part of his own history. He remembered sailing on the steamer from Suez to Suakin. He could smell the coffee in the guesthouse kitchen. He could see the tomb of Sheikh Barghout, which the sailors hailed when they passed.

An hour before it was time to lock up the cells, Jawhar interrupted the reminiscences Father Johann was sharing with Bakhit. He stood at the door and called him. His voice was sad.

“Bakhit, I need to speak to you,” he said.

Bakhit wasn’t in the right frame of mind to listen. “Tomorrow, Jawhar,” he said.

Jawhar didn’t reply. Bakhit looked up at him, expecting him to leave. Jawhar nodded and turned away, saying, “I’ll see you tomorrow, brother.”

But no one saw him again.
