15.

‘No way!’ River hissed. ‘It’s fate!’

‘It’s a bottle on the sand,’ Sealah managed to mutter, cringing up at Brady, who looked just as stricken as she felt. Around them, everybody else was hooting their approval- even those who weren’t in on why Brady’s spin had proved to be ironic. ‘If we’d been on a carpeted floor, it would have spun a bunch more times...’

‘And it still probably would have landed on you, oh Marked one!’ Kristen hissed before dissolving into a fit of giggles with River. She felt River give her a little push. ‘Either way, this is your moment Sealah- so make it one he’ll never forget.’

‘Think of Solstice,’ River whispered, and that one word got Sealah moving. ‘Take back what’s yours.’

Sealah was trembling all over as she reluctantly and awkwardly crawled to meet Brady in the centre of the circle. The moment would have been uncomfortable enough as it was, but the look on Brady’s face- like she was a tarantula approaching him- was what made her heart twist in her chest.

God, does he have to look so disgusted? She wondered, fighting back tears as she reluctantly sat on her haunches in front of him. At least the fact that Mariah now looked more like a thunderstorm- a grey one- in her ensemble than a streak of lightning offered some comfort. She’d wanted this moment but now it was Sealah’s, and Sealah knew that Kristen had been right: She had to give Brady something he’d never forget.

I wanted this too, didn’t I? She wet her lips and offered Brady a crooked: ‘What are you gonna do?’ smile. It’s why I sat down and stayed there.

But she didn’t want it now- not with Flynn watching and judging, and not with the Kiana, Mariah and Bridie all praying that she had bad breath or a fuzzy tongue. No kiss ought to feel this stilted- but especially not someone’s first, and this was what this was for Brady- his first physical, romantic encounter. How could she let it play out like this, now that she knew how hard he was fighting to have something more?

‘This isn’t destiny or anything…’ Brady muttered, inching closer to her and limply putting his hand on her hip. ‘It’s just a game.’

Sealah’s tummy contracted on a sharp intake of breath, but she covered it by sliding her hand around his neck and urging his face closer as she too, leaned in. ‘I know…’ she turned her face just as Brady’s eyes closed and his brows drew together like he was about to receive a punch- and pressed her lips against his cheek, pecking him slowly before whispering into his ear: ‘So I’ll let you win this one. That way- you can choose who wins overall…’ and then she drew back, smiling.

Brady blinked as everyone began to boo. ‘That’s it?’ his eyes asked.

‘It’s all you want, so of course that’s it,’ Sealah’s sad smile said in response, and then she was crawling backwards and feeling… lighter. So light that she could have floated away.
