Monasterio de San José de Nazaret
Nr. Segovia, Spain
A Week Later…
Abbot Louis nodded his approval as he slammed the heavy iron grid gates shut, pausing a moment to savour the echo rebounding around the tunnel walls that led to his study. The air still carried the aroma of incense and spluttered candles carrying his prayers up to God.
Affixed to the wall and covered in a golden mantle hung the monastery’s most precious treasure, The Eyes of Christ, but to be referred to only as The Raising of Lazarus. Only his benefactor, the Condesa Maria Francisca de Toledo herself, and the newly appointed Artista del Monasterio, the official monastery artist, knew of its provenance, its power, and whereabouts. It was to remain that way until circumstances demanded otherwise.
Abbot Louis returned to his study, and as he had asked, the newly appointed monastery artist was there, kneeling in prayer before his personal shrine.
“Ah, Brother, you may finish your prayers and come over to my desk please.”
The monk made the sign of the cross, stood, and let his cowl drop, bending his head before sitting where his Abbot was pointing.
“This draft you have produced, Brother, I am impressed with, especially the hands. Tell me, honestly, do you think I’m vain having such a work commissioned?’
“Not at all, Father,” the monk replied. “It is expected of you and has been a long monastic tradition.”
“That’s reassuring, thank you. Tell me, who is the lady you have depicted as our Blessed Mary? She looks so serene.”
“It was somebody I used to know.”
“Remarkable.” Abbot Louis looked thoughtful. “How long before the work will be completed, do you think?”
“Between the Daily Offices and ceremonies, it could be finished in three weeks, Father.”
“I look forward to that, Brother. Before you go, I have a letter for you. It was addressed to the Condesa Maria, who forwarded it here. Rest assured your location is safe with us. Unlike some monasteries, we do not open personal correspondence.”
The Brother took the letter and knew at once who it was from. There was no disguising her calligraphy style of writing.
Once in his cell, he put the letter to one side. The Office of Vespers and his obligation demanded immediate attention. During the recitations alongside his fellow monks, he allowed his thoughts to wander and saw her face in his mind.
Beloved Ulla.
If his heart lurched, he turned his mind back to Lazarus and the eyes of Christ into whom he had stared.
There was no turning back.
