THE LAST WORD

THIRTEEN

‘So, do I take it we can eliminate Scott Jameson from our enquiries, sir?’ said Wright. He was driving himself and Barton to meet Jenny Dawson at her Blackley home to interview her.

‘Yes, Ollie’ said Barton. ‘He got caught up in what’s proving to be one almighty great holy mess, but I don’t believe he was toxic in it all. He was just being a twat’.

‘I agree, sir’ said Wright. ‘But to change the subject rather I do think we need to talk about DI Bradshaw. I’ve noticed his mood lately has sometimes been less than fulsome when it comes to the task in front of him’.

‘As usual, Ollie, your thoughts chime with mine’ said Barton. ‘I’ve been thinking for some time that Bradshaw has been getting restless’.

‘I think it comes from him being a DI, sir’ said Wright. ‘That’s obviously a very senior rank but in our particular team he’s a bit like a tiger with no teeth’.

‘Because it tends to be you and me running the show and the rest of the cast falling into line’.

‘Exactly, sir’.

Barton thought for a moment. He’d always liked Adrian Bradshaw and thought highly of him, not just as a police officer but they also shared the common ground of single fatherhood. They were both widowers. They often understood each other better than anyone who wasn’t in that position. But there was certainly the beginning of a situation brewing with Bradshaw and Barton knew he needed to address it. It could be something that he would incorporate into that blessed report he needed to complete for Chief Superintendent Parsons and Barton made a mental note to do just that. He cursed that fucking report. In that moment he wanted Parsons to just drop dead. Well, maybe not that extreme but something that would take the self-important tool out of Barton’s orbit. Why couldn’t some kind of human resources outfit produce the report and he as the detective superintendent would just add his two Bob’s worth when it was complete? He wouldn’t mind them shadowing the team for a few days, so they got a gist of how they all did their thing of investigating murder. Anything would be better than falling asleep at one in the morning whilst trying to get the report started after a bit of a guilty conscience had tripped in. If he wanted those below him to respect his decisions, then he needed to respect the decisions of those above them. It all kind of balanced out in the end. Sort of. Well it was meant to. However much of an irritating cunt someone above him could be.

‘So how close are we to closing the net on this killer, Ollie?’

‘I’d say we were as far away as we were on day one, sir’.

‘Absolutely, Ollie’ Barton agreed. ‘Jackson Chambers and Chloe Dawson may be involved somehow’.

‘But how, sir? People go missing all the time and for all kinds of different reasons’

‘I know, Ollie. But there’s something that’s picking away inside my brain’.
