Chapter Twenty-two

Hannah tossed and turned in bed. Each time she finally settled, Sasha’s words replayed in her mind.

I miss you.

She couldn’t escape the words. Had Sasha really meant them so sincerely? Or was she so tired she probably wouldn’t even remember having said them? Either way, they’d been said, and the way they had been together had been good. So good. Like a baseball in a well oiled glove, they fit. An analogy Brandy would not understand.

Hannah grew frustrated and sat up. Brandy. She had been calling, and Hannah had been avoiding her since she’d seen Sasha. It was so clear to her that Brandy wasn’t who she wanted, and she knew she’d tried to make sure they were only friends, but people were human and they had wants and desires, despite being told no.

She could remember being younger and falling for a woman who only wanted to be friends. She’d agreed only to get a chance to be around her, hoping that something would somehow change. But when it didn’t, she was completely heartbroken. It had been the first time she’d cried over a woman.

She crawled from bed and headed for the shower. She should probably end things with Brandy before it got bad. Because she knew Brandy liked her and it could never end well. But Mickey was so excited she’d made a new friend so they could have double dates and do things together. And she had promised to try rock climbing.

She sighed as she stepped into the shower and allowed the lukewarm water to slosh down her skin. She soaped herself and admired the work she’d done so far on her body. She was not only firm and tight, she was pushing built. She felt stronger than she ever had, yet she was still so confused inside.

She wished Sasha was the worst of her worries, but she no longer was. Now it was Casey and his girlfriend. She’d thought about telling Sasha about the situation, but she figured she had enough to worry about. Besides, they weren’t exactly close anymore or discussing anything very personal. She didn’t even know if she’d see her again.

Frowning, Hannah exited the shower and dressed. It was early morning and she knew Casey would be up soon to work out. She was proud of him for sticking with it, but this morning they needed to work their minds, not their bodies.

She walked to the kitchen and started the coffee. Then she took a mug down the hall to his room. The door was slightly askew, and she entered quietly. It still smelled the same as it had since his high school days. Like cologne and shoes. She sat at his bedside and shook him awake. He rolled over with his arm over his head.

“What? What is it?”

“Get up, cowboy. We need to talk.”

He pushed himself up on his elbows. His hair was sticking up on one side and his cheeks were ruddy from sleep.

“Huh?”

“Here, have a few sips and get dressed. Join me in the living room.
